Judder in Plex windows player but not media player (HTPC)

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest

I have a Lenovo Thinkcenter mininpc to playback movies from my plex server.

Plex server is 8700k with uhd 630 onboard running 23TB raid 6 storage and Gigabit fiber connection and gigabit lan

The lenovo player is a i5 8500T with 16GB ram uhd 630 onboard and a m.2 drive on local network via wifi and avg 500Mbit connection

Problem is i cant get the plex for windows to playback any file weather 4k Hdr or 1080p smoothly without judder. Tried fresh install of windows, multiple intel driver versions. This player worked flawless when hooked up to a 1080p tv streaming and transcoding. Issues started happening when i moved it to my 4k tv hooked up via displayport (4k 60hz)

The Htpc player version plays everything butter smooth on the 4k tv even when you switch it out of TV mode so it looks like the windows app. Vlc plays the file buttery smooth too. Im talking original format, no transcoding.

The windows app just pings cpu and gpu at near 100% with hardware acceleration on or off in the player settings. With HW acceleration off it seem better except for occasional stutter but still seems like its lagging.

Has anyone had this issue or been able to resolve it as i’ve done everything i can including upgrading the single channel ram in there to dual channel with no resolution.

I thought I was the only one having issues.
To confirm, I have a 60TB NAS server with a Windows VM that hosts my PLEX server at the latest version - it has an i7 6900K, 64GB RAM and runs headless, no GPU installed.

The client PC that is having the issue is an AMD 5950X, 32GB RAM, 1080Ti PC with ‘PLEX APP’ and Plex Media Player - everything is played in ‘Original’ quality from the server. This is only a pissant 13mbit 1080p MKV with subtitles. No transcode. I’ve tested turning off Hardware acceleration and flipped EVERY setting in the local app player settings one at a time restarting with each change, turned off ALL other software running in the background and it still happens…

This is over gigabit LAN to the Windows App and there is a judder every few (20-30) frames. but ONLY with the Windows App, VLC, MPC-HC, Chrome and the old Plex Media Player will play the file without issue and it’s starting to make me lose my marbles honestly. I WANT to use PLEX because of all the ‘nice to have’ features but if it can’t handle playing a damn video smoothly I’ll use MPC-HC again.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate the help, talk techy to me, I’m an IT Technician by trade so know how to use a PC. I’m also happy to document, diagnose and troubleshoot with staff if anyone feels so inclined.

Have you tried running the htpc version of the plex app? Theres a button to toggle it from tv mode to look like the windows version. Thats been my work around

That’s “Plex Media Player” you’re talking about, not “Plex HTPC”.

Same issues with me. I am running Plex for Windows on a Ryzen 3700x, 16GB RAM, and a 3070. When I play back with Plex for Windows its a stuttering mess. This is when playing original quality OR transcoding. Both CPU and GPU usage on my server and client are basically zero. I am on wire gigabit.

When I play the exact same thing at the exact same time in a browser window right next to Plex for Windows it runs fine, no issues at all, transcoded or direct playing. Something is wrong with Plex for Windows. Its been like this for months, I just don’t bother with it usually, I just use a browser.

I have not tried the HTPC program.

I also have this issue. It seems to me that Plex for windows (or Plex HTPC) isn’t hardware decoding. It actually don’t hardware decode any of my meida (1080p or 4k hevc).

I also have big problems with Windows clients.

I have an update and another issue for which I will make another thread.

I’ve been testing over the course of the last week and there are some things I’ve found:
1: If I start Plex within the first few hours of starting the PC (1-2 hours) I can play everything and anything just fine within the first 5 hours. If I close Plex or leave the machine idle for a while (shortest was 1hr 50) the issue occurs - Regardless of if I have closed Plex.

2: If the issue occurs and the machine is Restarted (Hybrid Shutdown disabled) it will once again work without issue for about 5 hours.

3: If I restart the PC and leave it on overnight, logged in, no applications running, the issue will be present by morning.

After reading the link you put in @OttoKerner I’m sure that is possible the fault described could cause similar symptoms as what is described here. However, I’m not confident that it is the same issue as what I’m having due to the fact that I can watch multiple TV shows with no issues but after roughly 5-6 hours of OS up-time, my issue starts. Additionally, I only have the issue with PMP and not Plex HTPC, which works fine 100% of the time, the same with all other players such as VLC and MPC:HC/K-Lite - MPC:HC is also running a copyback setup for Smooth Video Project and playback has no issues like this.
