Keeps playing when iPad lid is closed

This problem began occurring when my device received the most recent UI update. On my iPad I have the Apple branded Smart Cover. When I flip the lid closed the iPad goes to sleep. This used to always turn off plex as well, until recently. Now when I flip the lid closed I still hear the video playing. I have to either pause on the Lock Screen or close the app before closing the lid. Or sure if it’s related but my battery is also dying crazy fast when the device is not being used.

I tried playing with the handoff feature on the iPad and that made no difference. I tried un/reinstalling the app, no help there either. I verified this problem is specific to Plex. When I am playing any other media on any other app it stops when I close the lid.
