The new experience lacks support for IPv6 servers on iOS (and Android).
The current iOS app supports IPv6-only servers so this feels like a big regression as remote play will just stop working altogether with the new app.
Android (mobile and TV) has never supported IPv6 servers as far as I’m aware, which is also very much a shame.
This is a dealbreaker for many people with CGNAT, which is becoming the norm.
Please do not replace the old app in the store without this feature, or at the very least, keep the old app in the store until IPv6 is supported.
I’ve been a Plex user for years and this “new” experience will basically kill my ability to remote play without some complicated tunnelling setup.
Exactly. I still don’t understand why it takes so long to implement true IPv6 only network support when one of the main reasons people use plex is for remote streaming.
Maybe now when plex raises fees they will finally find the funds to hire a junior network developer who has 2 years of experience implementing IPv6 only networks to finally end this desperation.
Actually in regards to iOS, I’m now wondering if the issue is not related the new experience not supporting Custom server access URLs… I managed to get a tunnel with IPv4 support working via the browser but somehow the apps (new experience iOS and current Android app) still don’t see the content.
It would be great to get some input from someone from the Plex team on the status of IPv6 and Custom server access URLs. If you read this, please please please bring some light to the issue.
Atm, only the current iOS app and web are working with remote play.
It’s crazy that even the old apps only Apple devices had good working IPv6 evens when the devices support it. Remote Access through IPv6 networks need to be addressed.
Saw this too I’ve disabled Auto-updates for now as well.
So annoying to see the Plex team pull a Sonos on us + being completely quiet around this is not encouraging.
In the Announcement they said * Manual Connections: We do not currently have plans to offer the ability to specify “manual connections” to Plex Media Servers in our new app experience. I did get a email when i finally got through to support about IPv6. They said “I don’t have specific details to share (and certainly not a specific time frame), but I can mention that I’ve seen recent internal discussions around improving IPv6 support in the product as a whole (in regards to “remote” access). So, it’s definitely not something being ignored.” I hope this really is the truth after the Manual Connections support gone.
“certainly not a specific time frame” is not encouraging because that screams “not in 2025” (otherwise they would have said “considering it for Q3” or something) but we’ll see.
Interestingly, I had a feeling this was gonna happen so I spent a Sunday afternoon 2 weeks ago trying to setup a Cloudflare Tunnel (which worked) but it turned out that the process ends up crashing on my NAS regularly and I’d have to restart it manually. I also tried Tailscale that day, which worked relatively well on web (despite much longer loading times) but somehow the apps still couldn’t see the content, despite me configuring the custom server URLs as normal.
Eventually got fed up, might give it another shot later but at this point I’m so wound up about Plex’s move that I’m more willing to spend time trying Jellyfin, even see if I can support their open source effort.
I was a huge Plex advocate but they completely broke that trust.
I don’t understand how Plex can prioritise a new, half-baked app that can’t even delete a video, but they are not concentrating on mission critical remote access post-IPV4 dedicated addressing!
@dvllio You can also install tailscale direct on your server. No need for a separate device. I only installed on a Pi because that Pi also does my adblocking.
I tried installing it on my NAS before but I kept having issues because the Linux distro running on it is limited. I’m sure it could work but I got sick of fixing issues after issues so I’ll try the RPi instead and report back.
