Language Settings in Plex

Is anyone else less than impressed with the way Plex server handles languages in the metadata?
You get the feeling that there is a random number generator implemented that decides which titles and descriptions are used.

I have a library using German and another one using English. The latter one STILL gives me the titles in German more often than not, the descriptions also. So what is this setting good for?

example: pitch black (2000) will still after many rounds of the plex dance give me “Pitch Black - Planet der Finsternis” as the title, and a German description.

I’m having no issues on that matter:

  • can you please confirm the language settings within that library (for the library: ... > Manage Library > Edit... -> General > Language)
  • what agent are you using for that library?
  • can you check out Get Info > View XML for that particular movie and copy the values of the guid attribute in the Video element (value should be something like com.plexapp.agents.imdb://tt1234567?lang=en).

Also… what version of the Plex Media Server do you have installed and on what platform?

If your files are mp4/m4v containers, the german metadata could also come from embedded metatags inside these files.
Do this to give Plex’s metadata sources priority over embedded metadata:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards “Refresh Metadata” on affected items.
