Latest PMS beta "(Library) Refresh movie metadata periodically during scheduled tasks (#13250)"

Server Version#: 1.25.4.5426
Player Version#: 4.73.3

I was excited to see that with the latest beta PMS, there was finally an automated, periodic way to get fresh metadata, if only for movies at this time. Five days after install, this feature finally kicked in via scheduled tasks (“Refresh library metadata periodically”), but strangely enough, this morning it said “The butler refreshed 0 movies. The butler refreshed 63 seasons. The butler refreshed 0 artists.” So, it looks like as if this currently applies only to TV Shows, and not to Movies. Anyone else notice this?

Pinging @drzoidberg33 :star_struck:

For me it reported movies last night but the number 3 was odd as I’d added way more than 3 in the past week which was release recently …

Did it refresh movies or shows for you?

All the periodic metadata refreshes only refresh certain things. For newly released movies (released in the past 3 months) it will refresh more at least once a week (daily for really new stuff). For movies released prior to that period it will try to make sure the metadata is never older than 30 days but it will limit to 100 items daily here currently.

This will likely be tweaked going forward as we figure out what’s the best combination.

Ah, that makes sense. I did a complete metadata refresh of all my libraries about a week ago, so it must have taken that into account. Thanks for adding this feature!

Agreed, its a really nice feature. I do however find the new scanners so fast that I just force refresh everything myself weekly. They are amazingly fast

The date the movie was added is not relevant, we’re using the release date of the movie (and the time it was last refreshed).

Definitely fast, yeah, but a refresh of all my libs still takes about half a day

Would that be theatrical release date ? If so then 2 weeks would be kinda pointless as the periodic scanner would most likely miss them. Folks will most likely add shortly after its available on VOD or Physical disk. However, working out that release date would be VERY tricky.

Really, half a day ? I’ve 3,200+ Movies and 550+ shows with 20,000+ episodes and it takes approx 30 minutes to do it all.

Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but I have several overlapping libs, and they all refresh individually, of course. 27k movies, 160k episodes.

The 2 weeks rule is to catch those things that are really new only as these are things were metadata can change frequently (e.g. ratings can fluctuate a lot). Once a movie has been out for a about 3 months the metadata is generally more stable and there shouldn’t be large changes.

But as I said, I will monitor how well this works and tweak accordingly. If you have suggestions on what you think will work well please feel free to make them.

Makes sense, thanks.

This sounds about right. I tend to only refresh the very new stuff periodically, as to keep up with ratings, etc. Older movies don’t get updated much, but every once in a while someone sneaks in a change, wanted or not. For example, Dr. No has been stuck with a Russian poster for a while now LOL (and I’m too lazy to change it manually). TV Show metadata, as we all know, is a much bigger mess, and gets updated/changed constantly, for better or for worse.

That’s funny with Dr No… Its like that here also Dr. No (1962) - Where to watch the movie online - Plex with the Russian poster.

I use local artwork for posters and backgrounds so would never see that myself. Couldn’t handle the art changing all the time

You’d hate it with new movies. Posters can change daily :stuck_out_tongue:
