Server Version#: 4.57.4
Player Version#: LG Client 5.19.1
I’ve had no issues with the Plex apps for over a year. Today my LG TV app simply says “server is offline or unreachable” although my iOS devices are having no issues. All devices on the same WiFi network, all other TV apps are connected normally.
I have 1. restarted the server app, 2. rebooted the PC and TV, 3. uninstalled and reinstalled the Plex TV app, 4 unlinked and relinked the TV app in my devices, 5. checked that the ports match, and 6. hard-entered the IP address from the server in the app.
I’m open to further suggestions - just strange to see it stop in its tracks after working just fine 12 hours ago, with no other changes.
I have the same issue you are. I’m guessing you have your server set to require secure connections?
If so until this thing gets fixed set the server to prefer secure connections and you may need to program your plex server into the network settings of the lg client.
The LG App has to go out to the internet for secure connections to initiate.
I just came back from a few days away to the same problem, is there a workaround yet?
I already have secure connections set to “Preferred” (as opposed to “Required”).
Urgh… I’ve now made things worse. I tried the “Disabled” setting, and now I can’t connect to that particular server even from my laptop: I get “Server settings are unavailable”. Is there a way to revert this?
Thanks for the assistance! I managed to restore my config by editing the Preferences.xml file. I’ve done a hard reboot of the TV as suggested and relaunched the app, but unfortunately I still see the same “Currently Unavailable” error for all my servers. Any other ideas?
Check the secure connections settings on the server & TV and make sure they align.
I set my Plex server to secure connections = disabled and LG Plex app to fallback to insecure = never. The Plex app on the TV said the server was unavailable.
I changed the server to Preferred and the TV app to allow fallback on the local network. The LG Plex app then saw the server and could stream media. Setting the Plex server to Required also worked.
Note that I had to power cycle my LG to make the settings change take effect (just power on/off, no hard reset).
Plex Media Server settings took effect immediately, w/o a restart/reboot/etc.
I’ve been pursuing this on the other thread linked above too. What I’ve just found is that if I override the DNS settings on the LG side, pointing it to 8.8.8.8, things work as expected. It was defaulting to my router, 192.168.1.1. Checking my router settings, it is using DNS servers courtesy of my ISP: 208.76.152.1 and 208.76.152.9. Is there any way to restore functionality with the original configuration?
Changing DNS settings was going to be my next recommendation…
Some routers/ISPs have DNS rebinding protection enabled, which can block secure communications.
Using a public DNS server such as Google bypasses the protection. You can also use a DNS service such as Cloudflare, 1.1.1.1, which is more privacy focused than Google.
Some routers can also be configured to permit the plex.direct domain while keeping DNS rebinding enabled.
All the above is a long-winded way of saying, “I don’t know why it quit working when using your ISP DNS.”
Try using Cloudflare if you don’t want to use Google DNS. I’ve used both and never had issues with either one. If you’re worried about tracking go with Cloudflare. Most ISPs are just as likely as Google to sell your data to an advertising company.
