LG TV won't play certain videos anymore

I have been using plex for a number of years on an LG tv, and never had a problem.
Just recently I have had two video files which will only play for about 5 seconds and then it stops.

I am using the plex app on an LG television. The videos that won’t play both play on the lg television software through DLNA, but won’t play through the plex app. Both video files play fine in the plex app on the pc, but not on the LG television.

Both video files have an information text file so I will pasted the details.

What these two files have in common is the Lavf57.36.100 encoder, so I wonder if this is causing a problem with LG televisions.

I have the exact same problem since around mid February 2017. Most of my files that worked perfectly for the last 2 years are now not playing anymore through the plex lg tv app forcing me to us DLNA which is a pain. Any updates?

I can confirm this started happening to me again with the latest Plex server update as well.

Have the same problem, have any ideas?

Ditto for me, since around late Feb 2017. But only on ONE of my Two LG televisions. The 2013 Model LG TV plex app no longer plays a number of files in Plex. Tried deleting App and reinstalling, but same problem continues. Plex app works fine on my other LG TV (2015 WebOS model), and even on the older small Sony Bravia in the kitchen. Any ideas why this is the case?

Me too! Exactly the same issue. Content that formerly had no issues at all, no longer playing on my LG TV. Roku 3 is fine as is PC and Android!

having the same problem too…

just updated the server now all my .avi files will not play… slightly annoyed is an understatement.

LG TV no longer plays my avi files plus it won’t play any other files with external subtitles now.

same thing here, although I think the team are aware of the problem, Ive read other posts stating they are working on a fix

I can also confirm the same issue for me, after updating Plex server to the latest version.

Some files play, while others play as if the movie is 3 seconds long and then quits.

Do we have a confirmation that the problem is being worked on?

Just as an update, I have seen that it has been picked up by the developers. There is no workaround for LG TV until a server update is pushed out.

Hi Guys. This issue has been fixed with the latest Plex server update released today 16 March. I just installed it and my LG tv plex app is working again playing all files as before. Yipee!!!
Refer to post below for details

I can confirm the issue has been fixed here also with the latest update. Thank goodness I can now use plex again.
The update is Version 1.4.4.3495

Thanks plex.

Hi Guys,

I have a similar problem but I’m unable to upgrade my Plex Server App as it’s a cracked version running on a weak WD MyCloud NAS. I understand that this is unsupported but wanted to share my findings here anyway.

The problem seems to be with the LG WebOS Plex App wanting to transcode AVI files encoded in XviD and the NAS drive not being up to the task. I can stream files directly to the TV with DLNA no problem and the XPlay App also works fine connecting to the Plex Server on the NAS, so the TV is definitely able to handle the files as they are… It seems to me that the LG App is to blame.

It’s a real pain because my Samsung TVs work fine and I don’t really want to upgrade my NAS at this stage.

Hello, this is Micha.

I have an problem with my LG smart tv from 2015. It find the plex dlna server in homenet but there are shown now folders or films since 3 month. Before it was all fine. With other devices (panasonic recorder, vlc on samsung phone) there are no problems. I try to use the plex app from lg but it doesnt run. The app try to start and the screen freeze
