I am wondering if there is a definite ETA to release a competitive update to WebOS Plex app.
Current version does not support many features that all other apps already have. Things like Direct Streaming for Music, Flac support are basic features that WebOS Player should be able to support on all platforms. It is little disappointing that we don’d have it for LG-WebOS.
After all if you have both Android and WebOS smart TV I can say without hesitation that WebOS is much more sophisticated and ahead of Android Smart TV features. Most if not all Smart TV’s and devices support Direct Flac streaming and playback.
I know there is a little bit of difficulty building an app on WebOS vs Android. But this is because WebOS functionality and security is far ahead of Android. I hope WebOS Plex player will be available soon to take advantage of this great OS.
Have you tried the integrated WebOS media player? I haven’t tried it with Music but it works pretty well for the video stuff. It uses DLNA so make sure to enable DLNA on the server and then give it a shot. I would love to know if it solves your issues.
Thanks for a suggestion. I will try it. Still the reason I have Plex pass and use the app cause I really like Plex player. I have lots of flax music and home pictures and videos.
I can use my older Sony android TV but not the new LG OLED. That is just silly you know.
Plex needs to step up and release the same functionality as Android. WebOS is so so nice and much better for Smart TV.
Would love it if Plex catch up and give us a good player.
The current Plex for LG WebOS app supports direct play of FLAC. Do you have an older TV or a newer 1080p TV? These don’t run the newer version of the app.
it seems that the app for webOS has been updated but the update has made transcoded playback unusable as it constantly pausing and buffering even when there is a ton of bandwidth available.
I can direct play everything including 4K Blu-rays but anything transcoded is a no go.
You must have a WebOS 2 or WebOS 3 device. We are aware of this issue. There was a PMS update that is causing this. Work around for now is to downgrade to 1.16.
I have 2019 LG OLED65B9. I have Anthem MRX720 connected to the TV with HDMI ARC Passthrough mode. Yes, it plays FLAC but I have some files with FLAC bit rate 96k and these would not play at all. Also, I noticed in the Dashboard that it is not doing Direct stream like say my MAc or Roku or Sony TV.
Yes you do as long as the AVR supports it. My Anthem receiver supports this without issues.
My previous tv was Sony and I had the same setup connecting TV HDMI ARC port to receiver HDMI ARC port. TV will pass through the flac if the application allows it to do it. In this case for some reason I think the app is not doing Direct playback and passing the FLAC file directly to my Anthem receiver. It shows "Error code: h4 (Not Supported). It should not be processing the FLAC file but rather directly passing it unprocessed to my receiver. Android Plex Player does it but WebOS does not. Do I need to modify the profile?
Also as a proof, when I use LG build in DNLS player this FLAC file plays just fine.
It is an app issue or something is missing from the profile.
Just be be clear I am trying to play HD music which is 24bit and 96khz sampling. So fo example Tidal HD music would not play with this WebOS Player since it is unable to do so from my NAS.
Not sure what’s going on with the other players but AFAIK, 24-bit/192 kHz is not supported by the ARC HDMI standard. That is only supported with eARC. I’m not an expert but that is my understanding of ARC.
I wonder if your other apps are down-sampling the file while Plex is actually trying to send the full thing and failing since it can’t over ARC. Does your receiver show the actual sampling rate?
My receiver will do necessary down sampling if necessary. Here is my point.
DNLA does work using LG client
Sony TV pared with Android Plex player works using the same HDMI arc and HD music.
I don’t think I am missing anything here.
Further with Android smart tv Plex app I am able to do play direct but not with webos app. The webos Plex app does not have a setting for Direct play at all and checking the console it’s using HTML TV App.xml profile. This profile has no direct play section at all vs Roku, Sony or even iOS.
The app doesn’t need the profile file. It has it’s own decision engine and will decide what it can or cannot direct play. Let me check with the team to see if the app can even output 192 kHz.
I get that. But I’m wondering if your TV when using it’s DLNA player is internally down sampling before outputting to your receiver. That’s why I asked if your receiver shows what the input is? If it does, doe sit show the input as 192 kHz.
I’ll need to check with the devs on this too, but I believe Android has a limit on the sampling it can output, even through passthough. It may also be internally down-sampling before outputting to your receiver.
Can you enable logging in the Plex for LG app, playback a FLAC track with 24/192? Then playback the same file from your Sony TV, then get be the log from the Sony TV and your PMS.
The same file works fine on iOS, Roku and Android Plex Players.
Since my Sony TV os also connected to Anthem but MRX 520 playing the same FLAC I can see on the ARV it is down sampled to 48khz. Remember that Sony is also connected with HDMI ARC.
I also confirmed that it is an issue with sampling of the original FLAC but not 24bit. For example WebOS player would play 24bit-44khz FLAC without problem. Anything about 44khz sampling would not work. As for my Anthem AVR, it is able to handle 24bit 192khz PCM.
That brings me to a question what is the Plex player doing that High Resolution FLAC files are down sampled to 44khz all the time. My understanding of the Direct Play concept was that the music files were not being processes by the Plex player and simply passed through to AVR over HDMI ARC. Am I wrong with my understanding how direct play and direct stream works?
I have confirmed asking the vendor and checking Anthem AVR tech. specs that the receiver is capable of accepting and processing up to 24bit/192khz signal on all digital inputs.
My audio collection has few 24bit/96khz music but looking at the WebOS Plex client it does transcode all this FLAC files to AAC as you can see from attached screen shot in this thread.
All I am looking for is being able to play native FLAC Audio (no transcoding) directly using Plex client app. At this moment this is just not possible. I have seen many post and people running XPlay and this app will play the FLAC direct. I wish to keep and run Plex client WebOS and being able to listen to my HD music collection.
