LG webOS Plex 3.60.1 Buffering Problem

Just wanted to confirm Scrottacc’s solution IS THE FIX for 4K / Remux buffering

LAN 100Mbps = No good
5GHz WiFi on channel 36 with max width of 80MHz = buffering gone

Wow, nice to read that the solution worked for so many people.

How sad is it in 2019 that LG are selling a premium TV with an outdated 100MB connector. Seriously, how much are they saving on these $2000+ TV’s…a couple of dollars? I wouldn’t be surprised if their 8K OLED’s also show up this year with that same connector.

Anyone streaming 4k files with high bit rate as 20mbps with almost no buffering??
turning listening mode off worked for the connection speed and most streams.
Changing wifi channels did no effect.
I’m getting buffering on high bit rate files, but, if the TV and the server are on different bands (TV on 2ghz network and server on 5ghz, or the other way around) everything plays smooth, not a single stop.
Any idea why? Could this point to a definitive solution?
(my 5ghz should provide at least 120mbps and the 2ghz about 50mbps)
Before pointing to my router as the problem, keep in mind laptopp and server connected to the same band show no buffering on the laptop player.

My LG 65OLEDB8 is showing a Link speed 1000 and have no issue at all with 4k, except for some HD MA audio. But if I use DLNA for those it seems to work fine.

Hi SE56, the 2018 B8 are still supposed to have 100MB ethernet?

Yes I know, but my Router states it’s 1000Mb, my other TV’s are all showing 100Mb

I’m facing a similar issue when direct playing 4K content on LG B8. I have a Windows and wherever i play a 4K video HDD usage will jump to 100%,with read speeds of 150 to 180 MB ps. After a while the video will automatically switch to transcoding. On server Plextranscoder.exe seems to be the culprit for the disk usage.
-Happens with all 4K (have tested only mkv) from 15GB to 80 GB remux
-Only Happens when LG TV is the client, not on android SmartPhone or Samsung smart tv
-Generraly playing with external srt, but the issue persists without them selected.
-Wired connection via Gbit switch to server
-Moved a 4K file to the main SSD since it can handle much higher read load and the issue is resolved, but of course that’s not a solution.

Video is always reporting as direct play, allow fallback to insecure connection selected, allow direct streaming is unselected in LG app.
Native DLNA LG app plays the videos without issues.
Any thoughts?

I have found it’s related to 10bit 4K video with HD MA audio, 8 bit works fine.

Here is a good reference for Plex support.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/203810286-what-media-formats-are-supported/

Mine is all on SSD and present buffering anyways if both TV and Server are on the same band (and with larger files).
I haven’t configured DLNA LG app still. Can someone point me to a good tutorial??

@SE56 link seams to answer (not solve) the issue.

Solve NO, support NO.

DLNA turn it on PMS and your Router UPnP enabled.

Thanks man!
Maybe someday in the future it will support.
I didn’t have many 4k content, but it I’ll give it a try. It’s always good to know the work arounds.

No problem…

The TV is good for it, I gather so is Xplay. We just have to wait for Plex to support 10 bit mkv.

Most of my Library is mkv and now days I’m looking to move from HD to UHD for new content as it becomes available. The detail and dark scenes are just incredible with 4k. So I hope support is soon so Plex users can utilize the UI instead of alternatives. Only thing I will have to look at is storage.

After reading about everthing people said in this tread and looking at my current issue with PMS, I can savely say that the problem is “PMS”!

For the last 2 years I’ve been using the LG C7 oled with the X-play app, got the tv wired on my lan and never onces had any buffering issue with “4k movies”, no matter the bitrate etc.

However, the last few months all my 4k movies suffer from buffer issues, every 1-2 minutes or so. I’ve always update the PMS software, and ooh boy…how I wish I never did that :-(.

When I use the plex app on my lg tv, it’s even worse compaired to the x-play and, and guess what…when I use the LG movies and photo app, it works like a sharm!

So far, I have removes PMS form my nas, re-installed PMS, re-installed the X-play app, fiddled around with settings, you name it, nada, zip, nothing!!

Some how, some way, they released an update for PMS and messed everyting up. Very strange to see that this topic started back in 2018 and still people are having this issue.

Hi.

Jumping on this thread as I’m experiencing the same issue. Because of the following I believe the culprit is the Plex app on LG Webos.

My setup:
PMS - w10 (high end gaming rig) connected to router via ethernet
TV - LG B8 connected to router via ethernet

Scenario 1: Playing 4k mkv files on LG Plex client - constant buffering
Scenario 2: Playing the same 4k mkv files on LG native “Photo and video” viewer and browsing through the same Plex server content - no buffering, smooth high quality no transcoding playback from the beginning til the end of the movie.

This tells me PMS is working fine, network is fine. The LG client is struggling to play.

The only downside for me to using the LG “Photo and video” viewer, is that LG video player (for some reason) does not support subtitles (when they are embedded as tracks in mkv-s) specifically for 4k content. So I was hoping to be able to select subs using the Plex app, but alas - only buffering.

I hope this helps to debug (and perhaps using LG video player is a good alternative for those who don’t need subs)

I posted this in another forum section, but maybe it should have been here. DLNA client preferences got mad

If you have updated the WebOS on your TV, your custom profile may no longer recognize your TV. The string I was using happened to include the WebOS version number. Once I edited the string in my custom profile, the client was recognized correctly again. My custom profile specifies 4096x2160 as the resolution for all video codecs, however, this can be overridden by the DLNA client preferences on the PMS server as I suggested in my linked post. It seems that PMS is unaware that UHD or 4K exists for clients, even though it recognizes UHD or 4K media in any video folders added on PMS.

Has anyone found a solution yet or workaround? Do plex devs know about this issue or how we could contact them more directly?

No, PMS is not working fine. When you use the native LG player, PMS has nothing to do with that way of viewing.

When you either start using the X-play or the Plex app on the LG tv, PMS is responsible for streaming the file to one of those apps.

I never update my lg tv and never updated the xplay app, but i’ve always updated the PMS software, and i got buffer issue since a couple of months :pensive:

PMS is still serving the content even when you play it over dlna, no? At least it is showing it does that on pms dashboard.

Same here. I’ve recently replaced my 7 years old Samsung with an LG-55SK8000PLB. PMS ist connected via LAN. So far I’ve watched 3-4 movies (720p/1080p) with the new TV and always got this buffering issue at last once per movie. That sounds bearable but I can’t remeber that I ever had only one buffering issue with the Samsung SmartHub Plex app!
