@markus101
Come on guys, it’s time to change the record if for no other reason than this negativity is achieving nothing beyond sustaining an echo chamber.
Was the v2 app final release pushed out too early? Probably given the subset of users that were/are experiencing issues. Are there some UI design issues to sort out? Yes. Are the devs failing to respond or not addressing bugs? No - they have replied comprehensively in other less negative threads and pushed out around 4 releases in the last week or so in response. Is the v2 app garbage? Of course not. Its a big step forward.
The v1 app didn’t offer secure connections to server, couldn’t display subtitles without full transcodes, didn’t offer auto play, offered a poor experience for tv shows in both displaying season’s episodes and watching next episode etc, offered poor experience for finding related movies, and more. It was overall the poor relative of android and apple tv apps offering significantly reduced functionality.
The v2 app has put the LG platform on par with Plex’s mainstream apps and the devs deserve thanks for their significant efforts in this respect. You might not like it but it’s here to stay and more will be achieved through constructive feedback than negativity which I doubt is even being read by the devs - I’ve had nothing to do with the app development and even I glazed over scrolling through the negativity
I experienced no problems with the app apart from occasional buffering messages which was fixed within a few days. The two things I would like to see are:
size of posters reduced or a scaling option introduced. Many (most?) webos TVs are large and the size of the posters are unnecessarily big on screen - particularly the home screen looks inelegant with a row of posters cut off until you scroll.
Switching between libraries is fiddly and unintuitive and looks clunky. For me this is weakest part of the app. Personally I don’t like the hover feature as it jars with the rest of the interface which is click based and removing this hover feature would in my opinion be a short term improvement to make process more intuitive in keeping with the rest of the app. In the longer term it would be great to see a more polished library switching process.
But obviously the priority at the moment will be to iron out the major bugs that some are / were experiencing and overall I would take the v2 app any time over the creaking v1 version. Soap box back in the cupboard.
Well, I installed XPlay. Don’t know why I didn’t just do that when I got the TV. The interface makes sense and is actually usable. It’s not perfect, the TV season interface seems awful, but still more usable than Plex
I was going to say that it’s better at playing 4k due to direct play. But I tested the official plex app and it also direct plays today… Yesterday it was direct streaming instead.
Sorry for negativity, not sure what else to do with such a downgrade.
Unfortunately I have nothing positive to say about the update to the UI. Really quite dreadful and so unfortunate that Plex seem intent on sticking with this dreadful downgrade in terms of usability and reliability. It’s the same on the Xbox One version of the app, so I can’t even go to the other device I have that has an app for a different experience.
Interesting, first I’m hearing of this, I shall investigate as the LG interface is trash (echo my comments on this weeks ago), and from what I can tell, Plex haven’t acknowledged this across all the posts I’m watching. Another user said it best; “We are not BETA testers”.
There’s been several posts from Plex employees, notably markus101, across a few of the more reasonable recent posts acknowledging there are issues being worked on. There’s also been 2 or 3 updates since 3.60.1 went live.
It’s also been made explicitly clear there won’t be a rollback. The current interface is the way Plex is going across all the apps.
Reading through the posts, I think Plex has reached its Vista or Windows 8 moment in the LG interface, when a brilliant program goes belly up. Hopefully it will recover as MS did with Win 7 and 10
I am sure Plex will respond well to your threat. After all you have provided such good information about your exact setup and what exactly is happening and the logs you provided are so helpful.
Clearly Plex can only help you as much as you help them to understand your problem.
Plex may be a lot of things but they are not vindictive or stupid. It would be stupid of them to release software that fails in basic playback of anything it is supposed to play. Since they are not stupid and they do say that 4K files are supposed to play then there must be something “special” about your setup or the exact file(s) involved. It is either that or they have something special against you and I very much doubt that is the case.
It does not matter if you are the only one or not. If you do not give Plex enough info to diagnose your issue they can only guess what might be going wrong.
Setup details and log files for when the problems happen are, at a minimum, needed for Plex to find and fix what is wrong.
Indeed.
Even in that 50 odd post thread there is one set of logs provided .
It’s obviously far easier expecting everyone else to make the effort.
As a side note although TV apps aren’t my cup of tea as a main client, I do tend to check them out and monitor progress. When I bought my LG UHD about 6 weeks ago it was pretty unusable with just about anything. In the last few weeks it was narrowed down to the only issue being with HDR content when also using subs.
Now even that’s fixed.
It actually performs pretty well now outside of slightly sluggish navigation and of course the Plex.Inc enforced UI.
As I side it’s never gonna be my main client but I can still me using it plenty.
Yes i noticed the same thing. For weeks i got the H4 codec error on my LG TV, but a few days ago i could play my media with no error. However as of yesterday my LG TV can’t find my server anymore? Anyone has the same problem or can help me with a fix? I already ported my IP & server and it is working. I can stream on my smartphone and laptop; but not on my TV. Anyone can help me here?
Are idx/sub subtitles supposed to work? I can’t get them to display, only srt. I think idx/sub used to work in the previous app version before the re-design. Any setting I may need to change or enable, either on the TV player or PMS?
Unpopular opinion coming through, I thought the plex update made it look much better. Not gonna go into detail though, let’s just not pretend that the old interface was intuitive, because it wasn’t.
That being said, there are still UI improvements that can be made and all this negative feedback is definitely going to have an effect.
I have had a slight change of heart and feel the need to give credit where credit is due.
I still think the new UI on Android mobile is a train wreck (and the current beta for Android TV is also a bit of a mess) but, I gave the new Roku beta a try and I have to say it’s WAY better than I expected. I have decided I just don’t like the new interface on my devices (including PMP) but on a TV it really works nice. I still think the option to select which server(s) are shown is SUPER important but it does work good on a TV.
I have not tried it on the LG webOS but the UI appears to mimic the Roku so I thought I would rescind some of my previous venom.
Please allow us to choose which theme works best for us? You are now forcing onto us a specific user experience.
Perhaps create a POLL/do some market research too find out what the community thinks of the new design? Must say I truly do not understand this strategy…
The only relevant thing in your post, is about where the playlist is. Should’ve just made a post asking that, or used google to search for the answer (because no doubt someone already asked that question). The abusive language and ranting was totally pointless and not needed.
