I have been using Plex Media Server on my kubuntu 20.04 computer on the LAN for several weeks and it was working well. Today, for no apparent reason the LG TV reports “this server is offline or unreachable.” The TV has good internet access as other streaming apps work well. I am able to play movies on a Roku device on the same LAN. The app had been working on the LG TV and now it is not. I have no reason to believe anything has changed. I have tried resetting the app on the TV, logging out and back in on the server, and enabling remote access. I have tried switching from the wired connection to the wireless connection on the kubuntu computer. I have tried changing settings related to “secure connections,” “preferred network interface,” and “list of IP addresses … allowed without auth.” Nothing has allowed the TV to connect to the server.
I am now into this issue for about 6 hours of total effort, still with no breakthrough. I am new to Plex, and this forum is THE place that the server help guides users to, so I had some expectation that I would get at least a response here.
I have read through all of the threads on this forum that seem like they could be related to this issue, and I have tried every suggestion that every user has made. The takeaway that I have from all of these threads is that they accomplished nothing in almost every case. The users who solved their problem generally did so by guessing and trial and error.
To summarize, it seems as though Plex doesn’t have any functioning support at all. Maybe I will keep doing the trial and error approach or maybe I will start searching for a different app.
In keeping with the theme of my previous post, I finally solved this issue by trial and error. I discovered that the Linux firewall was blocking Plex. I have no idea why this still allowed my Roku to connect and not my LG TV. I do not have any recommendations for other forum users because I am not enough of a networking expert to make them. I was able to mess with firewall settings until I got Plex to work. Good luck to the other users, and thanks for nothing, Plex support team. I will strongly recommend to other folks I know that they find a different solution.
