The server is unavailable - please help!

Server Version#: 3.77.4
Player Version#: 3.90.1

If you can help me, you’ll be my hero. I spent all day on this yesterday and am at a loss. I’m not sure if this is in the correct subforum, because I believe the issue lies with my server, but I’m trying to get the Plex app working again on my LG smart TV. I added all the relevant tags that I could think of from the suggestions.

The short story: The Plex app was working fine on my TV until this past week when movies/TV shows either wouldn’t load or would buffer over & over again. If I set it to stream at a lower quality then it would work but then it looked terrible (and I never had to do that previously). My internet hasn’t been performing optimally lately either, so I figured it was time to make some changes and improvements. Fast forward, and now when I try to use the Plex app on my TV I get the message “The server ‘Pete’s Laptop’ is unavailable. Plex will automatically try to reconnect to this server.” (However, I can use Plex on the TV via a different means, when it’s open on my laptop, as it’s discoverable via being on the same network via the inputs - but it does not have the same interface as the Plex app and isn’t as easy for my kids to navigate on their own).

Also, the Plex app on my Roku stick on a different TV didn’t work either, but via the Advanced settings in that app I was able to log in remotely. But that option as well as Advanced settings themselves don’t exist in the Plex app on the LG smart TV. I’d like the Plex content on the Roke Stick to be accessible via the local network rather than remotely anyway.

So that was the TL;DR, now here’s some additional details that may help you help me:

  • I use a VPN (PIA)
  • Our internet service is up to 250 Mbps
  • The Netflix and YouTube apps work fine on the TV
  • Prior to improvement attempts, my server and my TV were connected to our network via WiFi
  • Prior to improvement attempts, my Xfinity account online showed my modem as incompatible (it’s been that way for a few months but has worked fine)

Efforts to improve performance:

  • I have a Netgear router and updated the firmware
  • I connected my server (laptop) to a TP-Link Powerline Ethernet Adapter. The other one is connected to the router.
  • I upgraded my modem (ARRIS SURFboard Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem, 10 Gbps Max Speed, SB8200 model)
  • I connected my TV directly to the router via Ethernet cable
  • After my Plex app wasn’t able to connect to the server, I tried setting up Port Forwarding on my router for Plex - not 100% sure I did it right but nothing changed

Plex app settings (on LG smart TV):
– Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections: Always
– Prefer Insecure Connections: On same network as server

Plex SERVER settings (on my laptop - I don’t know what these all mean but am trying to list the ones that I think may be relevant):
– secure connection
– Authorized Devices: LG 86UK7570PUB (my TV), as well as my laptop, and several Roku Sticks
– Streaming video quality 8 MBps, 1080p
– Debug Level = Disabled
– Direct Play = checked
– Direct Stream = checked
– Remote Access has a “red exclamation mark” next to it and says “Not available outside your network”… if I click Enable Remote Access it tries connecting to the server then gives me the same message but now the button says “Disable Remote Access” and underneath that “You currently have Remote Access enabled through a manually specified port. If you wish to disable Remote Access, you will need to remove your manual port forwarding from your router.”
– Private (<-green arrow) Public (red “x”) Internet… “Manually specify public port” = checked (32400)
– Network: Enable server support for IPv6 = UNchecked
– Network: Secure connections = Preferred
– Network: Enable local network discovery (GDM) = checked
– Transcoder: quality = Automatic; default throttle buffer = 60; Background transcoding x264 present = Very fast; Maximum simultaneous video transcode = Unlimited
– Enable the DLNA server = checked

Do you need to see my “Plex Media Server.log”? If so, please let me know what to do - I tried copy & pasting it in here but it was very long and made the post too long. Thank you!!!

typically when it says remote access not enabled it means your external ports or port forwarding isn’t setup or working properly. you said you upgraded your router, do you have upnp enabled? that is how the “enable remote access” stuff sets rules to allow external port forwarding, if you don’t have upnp enabled then you would have to open ports manually or enable port 32400 tcp/ip using 32400-52400 usually works.

skraemertx, I may be wrong but I don’t think remote access is what I need resolved anyway, since my TV and server are on the same network?

Either way, I just logged into my router and “Turn UPnP On” is and was already checked.

There’s a UPnP Portmap table underneath, and the top row says:
Active=Yes; Protocol=TCP; Int. Port=32400; Ext. Port=20139; IP Address=that of my laptop which the server is on

[UPDATE - It’s still disconnected - after typing the below post I went back to the TV and the server was “unavailable” again - I don’t know why it appeared as connected for a minute…?]

Okay, I may have fixed it -

I disconnected the TP-Link Ethernet hook-up between my server (laptop) and the router, and connected only to wireless.

Now the Plex app is working on the TV again.

Does this make sense?

Why can’t my laptop be connected to ethernet and apparently HAS to be on the wireless network? Does being on the VPN have something to do with it? Is there anyway to make this work while being connected to the Ethernet TP-Link?

STILL need help…

Unless you are using Plex from outside your house you won’t need any of the remote access features to function. The problem is most likely due to DNS, but since this is comcast I would start with a modem restart followed by a router then devices restart. You will have to pull the plug on the tv for 30 seconds.

I had similiar issue. 2 things to try, set you DHCP pool something beginning with standard 192.168.x.x. Uninstall PLEX updates, configure the server and only after that install the updates. Hope it get you going…

Tiebierius, that worked!!! I can’t believe what a silly solution this required, but restarting everything in that order fixed it! I wish I tried that days ago lol - thank you!! :beers:
