Libraries not migrating in DMS 6 to 7 upgrade

I’ve been laid up again.

In order for the installer to recognize the contents of the “Plex” share, you MUST
a few things correctly.

  1. Confirm you still have Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server / Preferences.xml

  2. MUST give SYSTEM INTERNAL USER PlexMediaServer FULL CONTROL of the Plex share including all sub-folders and files (there is a checkbox for this)

  3. You must UNINSTALL the existing rogue DSM 7 installation with the ERASE option. ( The installer will not overwrite an existing installation. I did this to prevent accidental overwrite of a valid Plex install )

Understand the steps

  1. Set custom shared folder permissions using FileStation
    – Change ‘Local User’ to ‘System Internal User’
    – See “PlexMediaServer” appear in the list
    – Now create Custom permissions
    – (grants full Administrative, Read, and Write permission to user ‘PlexMediaServwer’

  2. APPLY this custom permission to All sub-folders and files of the Plex shared folder.
    – This will take time for DSM to complete (it’s expected)

  3. When complete, With the DSM 7 app UNINSTALLED & ERASED
    – The PlexMediaServer shared folder is empty

  4. Install the DSM 7 Plex app
    – It will automatically jump into “Installing”
    – It will SIT THERE at “Installing” while performing all the work needed to upgrade your DSM 6 installation to DSM 7. (about 3 minutes for each 1000 indexed items)

  5. IMPORTANT – DO NOT REFRESH THE PAGE
    – Open a new tab to DSM
    – In FileStation: Plex shared folder
    – You will see Migration.log appear after about 2 minutes.
    – you can look at this file. It will show you where the upgrade is in the work it’s performing.

After you see “Completed: Clean /volumeX/Plex” , Package center will then start Plex.

Your next task is to give the new Plex username access to your media.
This is the same task you did initially for the “Plex” user. You now repeat that for “PlexMediaServer”.
