Library does not display albums correctly

Server Version#: 1.30.2.6563-3d4dc0cce-x86_64_DSM6 (Synology)
Player Version#: AppleTV, Web client

I’m not sure if I should be posting this to the server forum or players forum. I’m seeing the same problem on both Apple TV and the web interface so suspect the problem is on the server but as it’s a display problem, let me start here.

I’ve just upgraded the server from 1.30.0 and moved the media folder at the same time.

If I look at the Music library and Album it displays tracks, not albums. There was no problem before the two changes.

The structure of my media folder has not changed. It has just gone onto a different share on the same NAS.
The library directory structure for music is:
/Media
/Music
/Artist
/Album
tracks

I suppose you’re referring to displaying the library by albums? Just double checking because you specifically mentioned „sorting“.

Yes. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll edit the original post. It is just the the fact that displaying albums has more than one icon / list entry per album.

I think I’m even more confused. Would you mind sharing a screenshot of what you get to see vs. what you expect to see?

Here’s a screenshot showing a few icons in grid view. I would expect to see one icon per album which is how it was until I made the change a few days ago. Now as you can see there are multiple icons for a single album, each one is a track on the album

This is just a small selection, there are many more for the same album and many other albums split up in this way, but there are also some which aren’t.

There was no change to the data. The files were copied from one share to another in the same folder structure. There were no manual changes to the settings when I upgraded Plex.

Have you configured your library to use/prefer embedded metadata?
What you show implies there’s some disconnect and Plex treats those entries as different albums. This can happen if album title and album artist don’t perfectly match across the album tracks (or no album artist is set).

Looks like you have an album considered as a “compilation” or" sampler." You will likely have to make sure that the album artist tag in the embedded information is set to “Various Artists” You can leave the track artist as it is.

As well, make sure ALL of your compilation albums have the album artist tag set, or you’ll run into more problems at some point in time. You’ll probably need to refresh the metadata, and might have to Plex Dance any of the affected albums.

Thanks for the hints.

It does look as if most (if not all) of the albums affected are compilations.

It took me a while to track down a decent metadata editor but I’ve now had a look at one affected album and there was no Album Artist set (there was a “compilation” flag set).

Setting the Album Artist to “Various Artists” and refreshing metadata has no effect (other than to group the entries together when sorted by artist).

Removing the data from the server, rescanning, emptying the recycle bin, cleaning bundles, putting the files back and rescanning as described in the “Plex Dance” article also has no effect.

There has been no change to the metadata between having everything working as expected and upgrading the server and moving the data onto a new share so I still don’t see what might have caused the change in display.
