Tried to find this in the forum but couldn't. I have a library that is shared, when others try to view the library "By Folder" they get the message, "There is no content in the selected folder." I can view the content "By Folder." If they view it by "All" they can see the individual video files, but they're all jumbled and out of order. I have them sorted into folders for a specific purpose. This is all viewed through the web client as none of the people I share with use any other method to view the files. Any help would be much appreciated!
Just wanted to bump this, installed the latest version of Plex server and it’s still happening. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?
It’s the opposite for me after latest update (Version 0.9.12.4). “All” has no content, the other views work.
Last time we had this issue reported it was simply an incorrect way of how paths were added to the library.
Are these Home Videos ?
I have a base folder Videos under share:
\Server-Name\ShareName
And below the Videos subfolder I have lots of folders with video files in them
I give Plex Media Server the path
\\Server-Name\ShareName\Videos
as the base folder
And I can see my subfolders when I view the Home Videos Library Section By Folder
If you add paths to the library
\\Server-Name\ShareName\Videos\Sub-folder1
\\Server-Name\ShareName\Videos\Sub-folder2
\\Server-Name\ShareName\Videos\Sub-folder3
etc
then the By Folder view will be empty
Thanks sa2000.
I have my Plex setup in a docker, so the literal path:
\\Server-Name\multimedia
Is mapped to:
/multimedia
These videos are instructional videos (like CBT Nuggets or PluralSight). But I have them categorized as home videos in Plex. I have one root folder:
/multimedia/instructional
The above path is the folder that the library is mapped to. Inside that library are several sub folders (e.g. PluralSight, CBT Nuggets, etc) with several sub folders underneath them.
When I browse as myself, I can see it organized by folder correctly. When someone else (who I’ve shared the library with) browses by folder, they get the message that there is no content.
Thanks again, any help would be greatly appreciated!
I got curious, so I checked with my other home videos libraries, and they were all the same way. It displays correctly for me, but others whom I’ve shared that library with get the no content message.
Just checked after the last update and it’s still the same. Is there a way to know if it’s acknowledged as a bug, or if it’s being worked on?
It sounds more like it’s something to do with your library. You may not like my suggestion but you can always move the sub-folders away and back in again on and one-by-one basis. I know that might be a fair amount of work but I did this recently when I found some of my folders weren’t displaying correctly. They then reappeared correctly.
Using my partners account, I can see the folders as expected “by folder”.
I got this issue as well. Any “Managed User” account besides the main account associated with the Plex Pass subscription cannot see content that inside a Home Video folder. They can see the movies when viewing “All” but not when they browse by Folder. I found that the Movie restrictions settings for the users effect how this works. I had the Movie restriction settings set for G, PG, PG-13, None for my daughter. I discovered that if I remove these restrictions and set or for “Allow all ratings” then the content will appear under the folders.
But I do not want to allow all ratings for Movies. Doing that exposes the Managed Account to be able to see any Movie regarding of rating. So it seems that the Movie restriction settings are tied to the Home Video library settings. I haven’t been able to find a workaround yet.

I’m happy I’m not the only one seeing the issue. I tried what you said about the restrictions for my “Movies” section and that was the issue for me too. Once I removed all restrictions, it worked as expected. Hopefully we can get some movement on this issue now that we can replicate the results. Thank you so much for your post!!!

@sa2000 and @netniV Are you able to replicate the issue with the steps @greddin explained?
I don’t use Plex Home so cannot help with this. Have to wait for someone else
The only workaround I can think of would be to move all the R rated movies into their own library then specifically do not share this library with the kids’ managed accounts. This way I can turn off all restrictions just so folders in a Home Video library will appear. The rest of the movies under R rating (PG, PG-13, G…) I don’t care of kids managed accounts see them.
By the way, I was hoping today’s 0.9.15.2 media server update would fix the issue but it didn’t.
Yeah, that workaround is really time consuming and shouldn’t have to be done. Very counter intuitive to what Plex is supposed to do!
After every update I test it to see if they’ve fixed it, but I don’t think Plex recognizes it as an official bug yet.
This has been raised as an issue with the Plex Devs.

Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you! I’d be so happy to see this issue fixed
I have been racking my brain trying to figure out why all of a sudden, my daughter can’t see anything in her library. I added a G rating manually to a few of the movies in plex and they showed up. So something in the code must be unable to determine the Parental Rating from the rating score alone. My 2 Cents. Please fix this guys.

This has been discussed with the Plex team. While it’s always possible things could change in the future, it’s currently intended behavior that viewing “by folder” is not available when content is restricted while sharing. Even if the restricted library items themselves weren’t accessible, the folder paths to get to them would still be accessible and in many cases that visibility would render the restriction largely pointless since the existence (if not accessibility) of the item would be evident as well as details about what it was in most cases (via folder naming). It’s not currently possible to also hide the folder path itself.
I don’t think you understand. My kids used to be able to on view the moves that were rated G, PG, PG-13 from my library because of restrictions. They are not reviewing by folder, but by ALL. Now with the restrictions, they see “No content in this Library”. If I remove the restrictions, they see everything in the library. I don’t want them to see everything in the folder.
