Library Not Populating Accurately - Ask for one show, get different show

Absolutely no idea what to do! Please see below for details:

THE ISSUE SCENARIO:

1) I create a new Library (SHERRY - Might Like - TV Shows) and add a TV Show (12 Monkeys) to it. Hit Save. (Note: I did NOT have the same problem when I created a “SHERRY - Might Like - Movies” library and added items to it.)!

  1. I go to the Library as pinned to my sidebar, and the wrong TV Show is there (The Twilight Zone).

3) I go to my media drives and confirm that the files for “12 Monkeys” is actually located at B :/. It is.

  1. I go to my media drives and find out where “The Twilight Zone” is. This TV Show is on N :/. So, the issue is not that I have a dual copy of the show files under an incorrect folder.

  2. This issue is syncing across my devices as well. I see it in the actual Plex Media Server app, and also on my mobile app, and on the Fire Kindle app.

6) I followed every fix I could find on the internet or in forums. To include, but not limited to, file naming issues, optimizing the database, cleaning bundles, etc.

  1. Everything I try to add is showing up in my general TV Shows library that I created back when I initially set up the server (in 2019 I updated all of my server hardware, switched to using Sonarr and Radarr, and Plex worked great until now).

  2. Plex Web Version: 4.66.1

  3. Plex Media Server: 1.25.2.5319-c43dc0277

10) Windows Specifications: WINDOWS 10 Home
OS Build: 19042.1415

Your logic for adding TV shows is flawed. In this case you would need to add B:\TV Shows to Plex and not the actual show subfolder. That is what is confusing Plex

A better solution would be to add tags to your existing library such as SHERRY - Might Like on each show and then just use filters, or sharing limits to that user.

I don’t think that’s right. I created a Test Library (see attached screenshot), and only 2 shows (from drive E:) appear after I add several shows from various drives. I ran a library scan, and let the server sit for a few hours just to ensure that it wasn’t a delayed population.

I checked the various drives where the files are housed too, and the drives had no errors, were not full, etc.

I haven’t had a problem populating libraries from multiple drives before. And those other libraries are still working fine. This only happens when I create a new library for TV Shows.

@MelVelka01 Again I don’t think you get my point. In your Test library add W:\TV Shows and then 1883 and anything else you have in that folder will appear in the library. Plex DOES NOT support adding E:\Outlander as a valid Library path. You need to either Create E:\TV and add that as a library OR add E:\ as the path.

Plex supports both spanning a library across multiple drives, and having multiple paths in the same drive. However Plex treats movies and TV shows differently in how they are processed. You can do E:\Movies and have all your movies in a single root directory. TV shows however DO NOT support that same structure.

@dbirch, I have entire drives dedicated to a media type. My E:\ is only TV Shows. My M:\ is only Movies. Etc. So there really is no issue regarding the naming since my Paths are dedicated and I am not mixing Movie and TV Show files. When I read the “Naming and Organizing Your TV Shows Files” article, it confirmed that my naming and organizing structure followed the Plex structure.

@MelVelka01

@dbirch is correct.

You are making multiple mistakes in your media organization.

  1. Do not add the TV show directory to the library. This is incorrect, not supported, and will cause problems with Plex. Add the folder containing the TV shows.

    Wrong: W:\TV Shows\1883
    Correct: W:\TV Shows

  2. Correct your organization on the E: drive. Adding the root folder of a drive to a library is not supported. Create a folder to hold all the TV shows and move them there. Add that folder to the library.

    Wrong: E:\Outlander
Correct: E:\TV Shows, and move Outlander, et al into the TV Shows folder.

Recommendation:

  1. Delete “TEST LIBRARY.”
  2. Empty Trash and Clean Bundles. See the Plex Dance support document. You are not “dancing” any media, but the document shows how/where to perform the steps.
  3. Reorganize media on the E: drive, placing it in a TV Shows folder (name it whatever you want, it doesn’t matter).
  4. Create a new TV Shows library, adding the correct folders this time.
    W:\TV Shows
    Z:\TV Shows
    N:\Kids TV
E:\TV Shows ← or whatever you name it.

An example using tags & collections to group desired shows:

Thank you, @dbirch and @FordGuy61 ! I’m finally seeing the light. I’ve scrapped what I’d done, did a full scrubbing, and am going to try to make a Collection. That and Tags are new territory for me. @FordGuy61 , the screenshots helped a ton!

I would use labels, not collections, Those are under Sharing

I’ll try that too!
