Library scans result in wildly varying content results for movies, tvshows and music

Server Version#: 1.20.0.3133 (Ubuntu 10.04; Buffalo Terastation 3410D NAS)
Player Version#: N/A

My library consists of many hundred movies, TV series, and songs. I’ve been running Plex for years. Happy Plex Pass user.

I recently consolidated content onto the Buffalo NAS. Lengthy process but all is well. EXCEPT that PMS library scans are resulting in very different content results that seem to oscillate between “close to right” (but never exact) and “way, way fewer” items, whether movies, tvshows or music, and whether performed by PMS at intervals (I’ve long set 1 hour update intervals) or performed manually.

Every other library scan will yield a “close to right” result; an intervening scan results in something like 75% or more of content entries missing. The files remain intact on the NAS. Permissions are fine. The next scan will bring the bulk of the items back.

I can always revert back to my original media setup but the NAS is otherwise behaving well, other media tools using the NAS work well, and Linux has no problems whatsoever traversing the directory structures and media files, which have been similarly structured for years – just now consolidated on the NAS. (Each media type is NFS-mounted and works well otherwise.)

I scanned the logs and found nothing untoward but obviously am no expert. At this point I turned off all scanning options as I dig into the issue further.

Thanks in advance for assistance.

The Easy Button:

What format is the NAS drives… ?
Btrfs, ext3, ext4, FAT, FAT32, exFAT, HFS, HFS Plus, and NTFS.

I use Synology NAS not fimular with the Buffalo NAS. But mine are formatted for ext4…
When I first set up my first NAS years ago I used the default, Had strange issues with different software. Finally tried reformatting with ext4, was a suggestion that I had dismissed originally.

Hi ‘Juice’ – naming conventions are per the book and haven’t changed. Probably wouldn’t account for differing every-other results. I was going to head down the path of cleaning bundles and such. Thx for the tips. I’ll report back with results.

‘nydave’, the NAS is RAIDed across 4 drvies. RAID is running XFS. I publish the folders (/mnt/movies, /mnt/tvshows, /mnt/music) via NFS (and SMB and AFP). No other problems to report; only this one with PMS.

Just figured I mention it since I was kicking myself for over a year with weird things I couldn’t explain. Still don’t know why it made a difference.

Thx nydave69. A quick update: after pursuing various solutions with NFS mounts I opted instead for SMB access via the NAS. This seems to be much more stable, all media appears as expected, and, most importantly, it’s stable – no more of the alternating missing content between library scans.

The root cause of this back-and-forth behavior is still unknown, but I’m satisfied with moving forward using SMB access on the NAS and SAMBA on my Ubuntu 18.04 running Plex.
