Lifetime Pass offer

For the last two years I have received an email from Plex offering a lifetime subscription at a discount. When I have tried to take up the offer, I have learned that it is only for new subscriptions. This is an unbelievably crass way to treat existing customers. Not only have I paid an annual pass fee for four years and received no reward for my loyalty, but you then offer new customers a better deal and rub my nose in it by sending me the details in an email. Well done Plex, it is quite an achievement to fail on so many levels with a single promotion.

Your account which has a Plex Pass wasn’t sent one. I’m guessing you have more than one account.

Then apart from the part about rubbing your loyal customers noses in it, the rest of my comments still stand. We pay money year after year, yet new subscribers get a lifetime pass at a large discount. I’m very sad to see what once was a great community project turn into a corporate marketing machine. New features are added in the order they can be monetized, bugs stay in the product for months and you have no scruples about inequitable pricing to increase your user base. These are the classic signs of a company that doesn’t understand how to build a sustainable business.

Hello Nick, I signed up for a Plex Pass, November 20, 2017, and was charged $39.99, I have been very happy with the service, so on June 18, 2018, I just clicked on my account tab and indicated I would like a lifetime Plex Pass. A note popped up and said that the upgrade cost would be $103.07, I clicked “yes, let’s do it.” I refreshed my account tab and it showed that I had a Plex Pass Lifetime. Hope this information will be of some help to you and others. Regards, ClutterBGone

The lifetime pass offer being sent to non-subscribers is for $74.99.

Wow… that is significantly cheaper than what it would also cost me to upgrade to lifetime (AUS$159.99 which is ~ US$118.50)

I’m a long-time XBMC/KODI user that is dipping my toe in the Plex universe on a 1 year plan. I would also be considering moving onto a lifetime sub based on a few criteria:

  1. Does it adequately replace and improve on all of my key KODI scenarios? (btw, so far it does. Kudos Plex!)
  2. Do I feel confident that the company will continue to operate and develop the components (clients/servers) and features that I care about? (doing OK on this front… but not a slam dunk by any stretch)
  3. Do I feel that the customer service and the handling of product bugs and issues is handled in a way, and to a standard, that I find acceptable? (again, doing OK…)

These are all completely subjective and when my current annual sub comes up for renewal, these will feed into my decision on whether I consider a lifetime sub upgrade.

If a heavily discounted lifetime sub offer were to appear in my Inbox between now and then, that would have a strong influence on my purchasing decision. Equally, if one does not, and I continue to see other market segments being offered discounts that I cannot access (i.e. I am less valued by Plex, likely because I am viewed already as a “captured” customer on their KPIs/Scorecards/Dashboards/Metrics), then that will strongly influence my decision NOT to upgrade. This behaviour would make me lump Plex in the same category as Banks, Foxtel, Mobile carriers, Utility companies, that make the mistake of ignoring their existing customers (or worse, treating them with contempt) and focus all efforts, and discounts, on acquiring new customers.

We are all just flexing our respective market economics muscles

This from Plex in an email:

“Different promotion campaigns can target different users. It’s certainly possible that your account could receive an offer for upgrading an existing subscription at some point.”

I just got that email i was wondering if the lifetime pass is a 1 time purchase or something i have to renew every year? if it is a 1 time thing i was going to get it.

The lifetime plex pass is a one time purchase.
