I have been paying $39.99 a year since 2014 and love using Plex.
A friend just signed up and used a promo code to get the lifetime pass for $89.99
I tried to use the same code and it looks like it is only good for new subscribers.
Is there really no way to get a discount on the upgrade to lifetime after being a loyal customer for 5 years? (Besides cancelling and creating an entirely new acct)?
I’m in the same boat. This is second time it came up for me. I asked and they said no. I would think they should give some incentive, even if it $10 off for an upgrade. Show some love…
I’m honestly not normally a complainer, but it just seems kind of unfair to me.
I’ve loved watching the product grow and mature over the years, and have gladly paid $39 a year. I I am now willing to spend an additional $90 on top of the $200 I have already spent to support the product. Pretty disappointing.
Same here. I’ve been a longtime Plex user and Plex Pass subscriber, recommended it to my brother last year who signed up and almost immediately got and email with a discount for a lifetime pass. Recommended Plex to two other friends - same thing happened.
I’m not here to look for special treatment for just myself, but rather for the whole existing Plex Pass longtime subscribers. It would be nice to see that Plex do indeed care about the existing subscribers and offer the same deal to us as well. I’d even settle for a referral scheme - something like invite 5 friends who sign up to a Plex Pass membership and you can unlock a one time Lifetime discount or something. At least that shows they want to keep the existing users happy. Even tho I know that we’re all hooked anyway and have probably spent hours perfecting our libraries and we’ll never leave… but still… a man can dream…
Sounds like cable? This is not the same as cable. Cable is a continuous service to content that you have absolutely no control over due to digital rights and contracts and once you stop paying/canceling, you are not entitled to a discount or service unless you signup again. Plex is not screwing you since its your content, and why not pay the lump sum of $120-$150 for this wonderful software package that Windows Media Center wasn’t. That is ONE cable bill for some people. It is your CHOICE to support the devs and pay monthly, yearly or just kick the can and go all in. We definitely can’t do that with our cable bills. You are not forced out of your money, you chose to let go of it.
With technology changing as quick as it does, a lifetime commitment is a gamble, even with a product as great as Plex…which is probably the 5th media center app I’ve “committed” to over the past 15 years. I am yearly and on the fence about going lifetime. A little incentive would say “we appreciate loyal users too” and probably make me upgrade.
That is my point exactly…I can go the new account and email route, save the money, but then have to re-configure everything and that just seems foolish after the effort I have already put in.
Guys from what I have picked up over the years If you are already paying for a PlexPass monthly/yearly you will probably never get the offer.
Create a new free account and wait it out…the lifetime offer will come.
I spent $5 on Emby, not my cup of tea. I spent $120 on Plex, but looking forward to the advancement and direction where Jellyfin will be going. I CHOSE to dip on a couple, but not dive in on all media centers. You are right, tech and company directions change, which is why even though the $120 seems bad up front, its the best solution at the time for my personal household, which we just can’t say the same for cable providers and their constant price hikes and channel changes. The argument was that the discount pricing was as bad or sounded like a cable provider and I’m just point out that it is not. You are locked into a contract and even have to pay a cancelation fee, which to my knowledge Plex doesn’t have one. If we all were given the same cable discount there wouldn’t have to be a discount in the first place. It’s unfortunate but where I would add discounts isn’t Plex. I’m a loyal payer of my bills for heat, electric and water… and I have NEVER gotten a discount on those utilities, only forced to choose better efficient electronics or appliances.
My whole motivation for going to Plex was to use the Live TV option. This meant that to even experiment with Plex for my purposes, I had to sign up as a paying Plex Pass customer. So, under their (IMHO-rather-cable-company-like) policy of only offering these kinds of incentives to new customers, I never had a chance at a discounted lifetime pass.
Of course, they know as well as I do that there is nothing I can do about it, other than try to find an acceptable alternative.
Its the same with everything, existing customers get screwed while new customers get the best deals. It’s why you have to switch services (insurance, ISP, mobile etc etc) every year or at least threaten to cancel to get a better price, can’t do that with Plex though so just make a new account when the next lifetime deal comes up.
The promo strategy does seem poorly thought out and causes resentment for current users. Considering word of mouth is king in terms of marketing, you would think Plex would want to keep existing subscribers onside. I cancelled my monthly subscription some time back specifically because I could not take advantage of promos when they came up. I was pretty peeved when I couldn’t use a promo code last time due to the fact I was an existing subscriber. Even began looking at alternatives.
I was able to take advantage of the current promo as I no longer had an existing Plex pass.
