Wow, I’ve been having this issue (only with certain files) for ages, and now finally a solution! Turning off refresh rate switching resolved the issue for me. It would be nice to see a real fix in the future.
I have the older Shield TV Pro and I’m noticing the slight lip sync issue as well. Still happening on the new updated version of Plex.
Is there a fix coming??
Having a similar issue where audio still plays on a frozen frame for ~5 seconds after fast forwarding on Direct Play x265 or M4V media. I don’t see the issue if I do the following:
- Never initialize seeking during playback
- Rewind backwards after the de-synchronization starts (Plex seems to “catch up” at this point)
Tested the same media on Apple TV 4K, iPhone, and Samsung’s native app…all three platforms appear to not be affected by the lip sync/frozen video issue when skipping forward.
Also noticed various “dropped frame” entries in the client logs when reproducing the issue:
[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] droppedFrames [38.13, 185.22, window=0, 50]
[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] droppedFrames [38.21, 185.30, window=0, 50]
[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] seekStarted [44.38, 191.47, window=0]
[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] positionDiscontinuity [44.39, 221.35, window=0, SEEK]
[Player][ExoPlayer] onPositionDiscontinuity, Reason: 1 Period Transition: false
[FF] Seeked inside buffer
[ExoPlayer][EventLogger] droppedFrames [44.39, 221.35, window=0, 19]

+1 for the sync issue when skipping forward. It happens 50% of the time when I watch a TV show and press “Skip Intro”. Going back 10 seconds backwards usually fixes the issue . But it’s not convenient.
I reproduce on MKV + x264.
I seem to have fixed all of my lip sync issues across all shield apps with my LG TV.
Label the HDMI input your shield is connected to, or your amp is connected to, to “PC” in your LG settings.
This seems to disable some image processing, one of which is called “real cinema”, which becomes completely greyed out when set to PC input, and audio seems to be perfectly in sync, even with refresh rate switching on. Seems like it’s an LG issue, not a Plex or shield issue.
Can anyone please shed some light on the reason for the dropped frames during seeking? Curious if it’s codec related or the SHIELD TV Pro itself
Having the same issue with my Shield Pro 2019 and my TCL 65R635 TV. When I use the Roku Plex client on the TV, the sync is fine but when I use the client on the Shield (which is also running the server) it’s slightly out of sync.
Are there any updates on a potential fix for this issue?
I have noticed a lip sync issue when using Live TV. I appears to happen when the show cuts to commercials and the SHIELD buffers the video for split seconds, but the audio continues to play, causing the audio/video to be off by upwards of a second. Seeking forward or back in the stream will reset it, but it will go out of sync during the next commercial. It’s also unclear to me why the SHIELD would buffer the video that the Plex Media Server is sending via direct play; there is more than enough bandwidth for the stream on the local network.
The issue seems to be more prominent on channels that play 1080i video and AAC3 5.1 audio. Both are sent direct play from the server, and everything is wired via gigabit ethernet.
I switched out the SHIELD for a Roku Ultra and had no issues with the playback. The problem persists despite changing Refresh Rate Switching, Passthrough, Enable New Video Player between ON and OFF.

Same issue here. Have LG oled8c and Connected the Shield to a Denonavr-x3500h receiver. Doesn’t really matter what i do or play; 4k, 1080p, 720p and as other have said:
“Going back 10 seconds backwards usually fixes the issue”
“The problem persists despite changing Refresh Rate Switching, Passthrough, Enable New Video Player between ON and OFF.”
I can add that I have occasional connection errors and that the old player keep playing the TV-show-them even after i started playing an episode. …and while troubleshooting this I’v other weird issue with it like the “system sound” disappears and the bouncing ball, for audio sync calibration, was lagging. It all seems to be connected to the Plex app somehow.
Right now I’m not sure its worth keeping the Shield to be honest…
We’re still investigating this, and looking into potential fixes
@DaveBinM Can you clarify if the lip sync issues seen in both Live TV and library files are part of the same issue?
Is there any ETA on a potential fix for this? Can you give any indication on the priority of this issue for developers?
It seems a lot of folks are having issues, and I know I’ve completely unplugged the SHIELD Pro from the network because this issue makes the device unusable with Plex.
I don’t have specifics on whether or not they’re part of the same issue, I’m afraid (just not an area I’m intimately familiar with). We also don’t give ETAs or indications of priority, but this an item that I personally would like to see fixed too.
Thank you!
Can the receiver be the cause of this issue?
I will try to reproduce the issue with the receiver disconnected but since its intermittent I’m not sure i can.
Not likely. I’ve seen it with both my TV audio, and soundbar.
Just wanted to chip in that I have this issue too. For me it’s most noticable with the new “skip intro” feature, because the audio usually starts out fine, and then I click skip intro and the audio is out of sync. I fix it by rewinding 10 seconds but it can be annoying. It doesn’t happen every time though.
My TV works fine, LG OLED65C8, its quite a bit slower than the Shield.
Cannot play some 4K content. 4k+subs are out of the question.
Yeah, I don’t have any issues (or at least anything similar) on any of the other clients that I use, which is why I reverted back to a Roku Ultra. The 4K content seems to come through just fine; it really seems to be only the SHIELD Pro when I’m watching Live TV, personally.
This exact issue is happening on both of my 2017 Shields. A quick rewind re-syncs the audio. Skip Intro appears to still have a few bugs on Android TV/Nvidia Shield.
Hello,
I have similar out-of-sync issues, but on a ShieldTV 2017 with up-to-date Plex client (Plex server on macOS with the latest update). In just two of my movies the Atmos audio will go out-of-sync half way through the movie. If I stop playback, exit the Plex app on my shield, stop it from running in the background, start it again and resume playback then the audio is in-sync for a while until it goes out-of-sync again. I should mention that the core AC3 stream plays well and stays in-sync.
The same two movies play flawlessly with Kodi and the official Plex skin, so this makes me believe there is a bug in Plex.
I’d love to see this issue fixed, please.
Same issue here. Out of sync audio/video.
Also I have an issue where if I pause a video there is sometimes no audio at all when resuming. It sure does look like an HDMI handshake issue as mentioned by other people on here. In some cases I had the feeling that audio format was different (noticed change in volume) after restarting the video. I haven’t tested this extensively as I just started using the shield coming from an apple TV. If I have more info I will let you know.
At the moment I am connected straight to my TV (Panasonic HZ2000, supports Dolby Atmos as well)
