Live TV and Recordings Buffering with new TV

Server Version#:1.15.6.1079
Player Version#:3.95.2

I just replaced my 10 year old LG TV with Plex running on a Firestick with a new TCL 55R617 4K smart TV with Plex running on the built-in Roku interface. The old setup worked perfectly but the new setup buffers both live tv and recordings both at initial launch and repeatedly during viewing. Does this mean my Plex Server is too slow to handle 4K or is there some setting I can change to prevent it from up-scaling to 4K. Any suggestions on how to fix this buffering problem are welcome.
Thanks.

I’m a Plex newbie, and just got the server working “directly” to my smart Visio like yesterday - after not being able to access the server from this tv since I recently upgraded to Win10Home. I assumed I had used the wrong Windows version until I ruled out everything else I could find here and on YouTube. You surely have more experience than I do - but may I ask you if your new device is using your server directly or indirectly? (highlight the server name at the top right corner of PMP screen, drop down to see if it says indirect). That is one way to slow things down. Plex ran perfectly on my Win7pro, but was not accessible once my computer/server went to Win10 because I still had work to do. I made the IP addresses static via router, and made firewall exceptions for both the port (32400) and the Plex Program via Windows Firewall. I couldn’t leave it alone until I screwed something else up, though, so I moved the Plex program over to a larger volume on the SSD to give it more room to play. Of course nothing worked after that, because it’s not a Mac and doesn’t work that way. This is my first visit back to Windows since “7”. After restarting the router and Windows, Plex would not load so I used Control Panel to “repair” and VOILA…fully featured screaming fast direct connections on all my devices. My smart TV takes forever to get the Plex program running (lately), but once there, it’s all good. I hope you find your solution. My inspiration was Jason’s Byte My Bits (YouTube) port forwarding video. Helped me venture out a little further than I normally would go on my own - and I just don’t read the technical stuff as carefully as I used to. Good luck.

I don’t see the server name in the “top right corner” of the PMP screen like you described, perhaps you meant the top left? Here is a screenshot of what that looks like.

If I’m missing something, please give further instructions.

Hi Robert - I was not clear enough. When my Visio TV is connected to my server, the top right corner of the TV screen (running PMP) shows which Server and which User is logged in and using the Plex server on this TV. The drop down menu on the Server Name can show you if you have that connection directly or indirectly. Also, if you have ethernet it goes without saying that it will be much faster than wireless - I have lost ethernet connection - the TV defaulted to wireless before I realized there was a problem. (I use a pair of old Netgear Power-links; not sure those are available anymore, but they work great for me)[Uploading: My TV Plex shot.jpg…] . Trying to attach a photo of that…

It’s also possible that my system is different than yours. I’m on Windows 10 with latest Plex server & players.

I see now that when I run PMP on my laptop I don’t have the same server drop down option that I have on the TV itself. Visio provided that particular plex player.

Sorry to get your hopes up - may not be the problem anyway. I tend to speak first and ask questions later.

Probem solved!

Thank you so much for providing the necessary hints. I didn’t even know that setting menu was there.

The screen shot I sent earlier was from Plex on Windows. I checked my TV that is running Plex on a FireStick and the direct play option is not there but thats ok because I wasn’t having any problems on that TV. The new 4K TV is running Plex on Roku and the direct play option was set to “auto”. I changed it to “force” and also changed the Local Display quality to “original”. Now everything is working great! The user interfaces are very different on the three different platforms.

Thanks again for helping me solve this problem.

I’m so glad it worked. You cannot imagine the workaround that I went through to get there for my own success. I feel that all over again. Have fun!
