Having the exact same issues, Plex support is just straight up ignoring me on every support platform. Im preparing a formal dispute in accordance with Plex’s Terms, and if they can’t reach a resolution by the deadline they set I will be seeking a refund in court. It’s complete and utter BS that they dont even offer direct support to people that pay them.
@morganj Why has this gone unresolved for 7 months? Everyone in this thread is a plex pass holder, which means they paid for this feature to be functional. And its crickets from you.
All of you tagged have been active since the last person requested an update and have said nothing.
Plex does not prioritize fixing paid features like this, no wonder LTT refuses to endorse them anymore
To sum this up for any Plex employee that actually feels like doing something about the issue instead of ignoring it forever, it CLEARLY is related to captions. There are two workaround that temporarily fix the inability to stream live tv on managed profiles, and both are in some way related to captions.
1: Turn captions on and off
or
2: Change quality to “Convert Automatically,” however this usually leads to captions being on, even if they are turned off
It is so bizarre that the root of this issue has not been uncovered yet.
@FordGuy61 maybe instead of marking everything as duplicate they could fix the problem so none of us have to deal with it anymore. After all, we paid for it.
I cannot tell you how many closed threads going back to 2022 I’ve read about this in the past hour that never received any response from a support member
I saw those, its ridiculous. It really seems like they are trying to be another low quality “free” streaming service that collects ad revenue and are just throwing the home media server users, including the ones that paid, to the dogs. Absolutely shameful.
Same issue. Very frustrating and seemingly shouldn’t be that hard to fix?
With regards to this issue, Plex’s VP of General Counsel had this to say:
"It is incorrect to state that there are ongoing issues with Plex’s Live DVR service. As you informed Plex on October 16, 2024:
Devices that allow direct play from the tuner, such as the Chromecast w/ Google TV, will not direct play unless logged into the account owner profile. When logged in as account owner, I can stream in 1080i, the native resolution of the broadcast. If signed in as any other user, I must go in and change the quality to “convert automatically” EVERY SINGLE TIME, and even then it only might play, and more often than not with captions even though they are not turned on. This is less than ideal because I dont want other users accessing the admin account, and having to repeatedly change the quality is too complicated for the seniors in the house. See Attachment A.
While we understand that you were not pleased with the functionality as it pertained to your Plex setup, it is misleading to state that the functionality is not working. It is working - just not the way you want it to."
While I am sorry if Plex’s forum admins do not like this or disagree with their legal department, it is an exact quote by Angelo Spenillo regarding my formal complaint on this matter.
Additionally, with regard to the prioritization of a resolution to this matter, Spenillo said:
“…Plex strives to make its software compatible with as many hardware configurations that it can - it is in Plex’s best business interest to do that. However, it is impossible to ensure that every hardware configuration will yield identical functionality. That being said, issues are prioritized based on the number of users affected and overall usability of the software. We regularly check our forums to make these determinations and set our internal road maps for product development and improvement. The bottom line is that DVR functionality does work for the majority of Plex Pass holders that want to use it and we are regularly considering customer feedback to enhance and improve it…”
Again, these are word for word exact quotes from the VP General Counsel.
You can form your own opinion on the matter, but mine is that Plex either A) Believes no problem exists (“It is working - just not the way you want it to”), or B) Has little to know desire to fix the issue because such a small portion of the user base uses the feature, even if every single person that uses it paid to do so.
No, you’re right, it shouldn’t be. They just aren’t prioritizing it (or well, they say its working).
@morganj android logs were requested but android tv isn’t capable of providing them, only network logs
Logs.txt (4.7 MB)
This has the highest view count of all the open issues in this category… @john_myplex or @gloves259, did either of you find a fix on your own?
Nope, the majority of my users use android devices like the CCwGTV.
Locally it works fine and as intended on all users for the samsung smart tv version. But Not all samsung versions work in general. My 2020/1 samsung tv, and freestyle projector, and brother’s 2024 crystal samsung TV apps work great. Slightly older QLED samsungs wont stream anything aside from “on plex” content.
I just kinda reduced the tuner count from my provider to save money as less people can use it, and only 1 of 2 tuners gets really any usage, because it doesnt work for all other users on android.
Darn, I think this is going to be left up to the community to resolve
@wally007 , what about you, any luck?
@gloves259 , you say “your provider,” so I assume you are using cable or satellite or something and not antenna, correct?
Just found another work around confirming this entire bug is a caption issue. Force captions to “always enabled” and boom everything works. Incredible this bug can exist well over and year and they can’t figure it out.
Edit: Tried all combinations of settings here. These are my results:
–No change whether “Automatically select…” is checked or not on any subtitle mode.
–It is broken with subtitle mode “manually selected”.
–It is broken with subtitle mode “shown with foreign audio”.
–Everything works with “Always enabled” selected.
Its not that they cant, its that they wont. Their attorney said its working fine and that this feature isnt even a priority. They ended up just throwing money at me to try and get me to shut up about it, but before that they tried to bribe me by saying theyd settle if I withdrew AG and BBB complaints, something they REAL QUICKLY back peddled on after the BBB said that would be in violation of the review fairness law.
I think a big issue is everyone is telling them it’s an Android problem which this is not. Combing the Android app for this bug is a waste of time. I see a caption bug across all my client devices except iOS. Windows and Linux wrongly show captions even when they are set to off. Android just ■■■■■ the bed because of it. Same problem just different outcomes.
I did NOT have this issue when running on the FreeBSD version of the server. I swapped over to Linux and added a Nvidia gpu for transcoding at the same time. I don’t know which or both of those things caused the issue. What else is everyone else running? Maybe we can narrow down this issue and make it easier for them to fix.
Server is unraid using an intel cpu, nvidia gpu, clients are a shield and several chromecasts with google tv. It would be fantastic if they did something with that but no employees have interacted with any threads related to this in 6 months other than to make excuses as to why they arent doing anything about it.
