Is anyone else still having major issues with Live TV on Plex clients? It seems to be broken across multiple platforms — everything except the web client, which oddly still works.
I’ve tested this on Android TV, macOS and iOS, and I consistently get errors.
There are App Store reviews and forum posts all over describing similar behavior, so it’s clearly not an isolated issue. Yet I haven’t seen any response or update from the Plex development team addressing this.
At this point, it really feels like Live TV has been abandoned, much like what happened with CableCARD. I get that the Live TV user base might not be huge, but it’s one of the features that sets Plex apart — and a lot of us rely on it.
Can someone from the team please comment on the status of Live TV? Is it being actively maintained, or has support effectively ended? Even a brief acknowledgment would mean a lot to those of us still trying to make it work.
Just checked - working for me on MacOS, iOS, iPadOS and TvOS.
(multiple edits with extra info below):
Server: v 1.42.2.10156 (same as you)
iOS player: v 2025.8.0 (same as you)
MacOS player: 1.110.0.351 (same as you, I think)
TvOS player: v 8.45 and 2025.25.0
I know (from forum posts and personal experience) that they have definitely been working on it for the ‘Plex experience’ versions of the player (in my case 2025.25.0 on TvOS). I don’t have the latest version as I accidentally removed myself from the beta and couldn’t get back in).
I set Use hardware-accelerated video encoding toDisabled, set Client Network to IPv4 Only, made a few additional changes based on the defaults and that seems to have worked. Is there any reason Use hardware-accelerated video encoding has to be disabled on the Mac Mini (M1, 2020)?
I have read in forums that different Mac Mini models for example have issue. M1, M2, M4 yet M4 Pro works. Now I am not saying that is correct other than the M4 pro which I own. On other reports M1 pro, M2 pro also support.
So my assumption is being those models do not support the Current Use hardware Accelerated video encoding
Live TV plays on Plex for Web, iOS, and Android TV, but not the Plex Media Player on macOS. Plex Media Server also crashes if I click through the channels on Live TV.
An initial request is made for the app to request local network access, and it’s enabled on my Mac. I’m able to access my libraries, but not Live TV, and Live TV works on Plex for Web, iOS and Android TV.
I took a closer look at the application and found Plex for Mac settings. I forgot there were player settings for the application, as there are settings specific to each platform. I deselected Direct Stream under Plex for Mac > Debug, and now I can play Live TV with Plex for Mac. Use Hardware Decoding remains enabled under Plex for Mac > Player.
If you haven’t already, you might consider adding your LAN IP/netmask to the “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without authorization” in the Networks settings. It might help avoid issues if there is a problem connecting to the plex.tv servers and locks out your devices.
