I’d like Plex to comment on this issue to give their perspective. Ideally confirming they know about the issue and are either waiting on the Amazon fix or can and are implementing a similar workaround as the team at HDHomeRun have.
I have to admit I’m really disappointed regarding the Plex support on this given it’s a paid for service, just a bit of communication would help.
I tested Live TV from Plex Media Server v1.18.3.2111-5a96726d0 with Plex app version 7.25.1.14216 running on Amazon FireTV Stick 4K - FireOS 6.2.68 (NS6268/2315)
Testing on an SD channel - ok no issues
Testing on an HD channel - picture froze after few seconds and audio continued to stream ok
@sa2000 Hello, We are experiencing the same issue on my 8 firestick 4k’s. Seems to only be on HD. I’m on the same version server and the same app version. Audio will continue while video freezes up. It can happen within 5 minutes or can happen within 25 minutes. Sometimes the video will catch up a little bit but still will be off by alot. Any update on this? Almost makes live TV unenjoyable
I was hoping to hear from sa2000. Probably will have to jump back to my Nvidia Shield and switch everybody back to roku’s :-(. The roku’s are so slow but they’re so stable.
Instead of going back to stable slowcu. I went ahead and forced transcode by dropping my bitrate down to four on the fire stick 4k and I’m going to see how that does. My servers Beefy enough to handle multiple trans codes:)
Hi all, went full circle with Amazon last night and it just felt like they were fobbing me off. Its seems this problem has been going on since 2017 and they haven’t done anything about it, my case has been going on 3 weeks ish and they keep saying there will be an update to fix this.
They have basically offered me a full refund on all 6 my 4k sticks some are brand new some are about a year old. ’ They don’t work as described under consumer rights’ sa2000 provided a link to the tech specs and it clearly states it can handle mpeg2 1080 @ 60fps
My question to you guys is will you guys seek a refund? If so, what does work at this price? Finally what does work regardless of price?
Yes, I’d like an alternative as I don’t want to live with either 720p for all of my content or change my settings every time I want to watch 1080i content on my firestick
The devs at HDHomeRun have put in a workaround, mentioned in the thread linked by @Puzzled, is this a possibility in Plex?
I think you’re misunderstanding which memory limitation @protechgarage27_gmail_com is talking about; RAM is temporary memory that running applications use to store data such as buffered video or other decoding data. The idea is that when the Plex app tries to stream Live TV, it is asking to store more temporary data than the RAM can fit.
Yea good point well made @willzone1 - My personal opinion is that there is something fundamentally wrong with the hardware on the 4k stick which is why no one has been able to fix this issue since 2017! Whether it actually RAM related or not I don’t know because other people say the ‘HD’ fire tv stick works ok with it and surely their RAM levels would be identical. HD home run say its the GPU ‘this contains the decoder’ Can you imagine the cost of recalling all of the 4k fire tv sticks!!! The trouble is what everyone is doing me included me is workarounds - fundamentally Amazon says it can handle the Vlan stream which to my knowledge is 1080 mpeg2 and it cant.
