Live TV Crashing after several hours on Synology NAS.

I have moved my Plex media server over onto a Synology DS3617xs back in November and Live TV always crashes after several hours, This happens for all clients so its system wide. The only way to get it working again is to reboot the NAS. I am running DSM 6.1.4-15217 with Plex version 1.11.0.4666. I want to make note that this happens with every Plex version since I installed it. I have the log files and will be happy to PM someone with them once you ask. Please help me solve this problem, I been dealing with it for over a month and my family is ready to shoot me… I did not have this problem when I was running Plex media server on Windows 10.

I have a Synology NAS as well and have issues where live TV will not tune any channels. When that happens I usually try restarting Plex in package center and if that doesn’t work, I resort to a reboot. But, the last time it happened I decided to look at the open connections on port 32400 while that package was stopped and there were still quite a few. I gave it a few Mins to close gracefully, but some would not go away so I found the Pid for plex and killed that process, even though it wasnt showing on the NAS process monitor, started it back up and it was working.

I know this does not help why it’s crashing, but it will save you from rebooting especially if you have other things running on the box. I would love to get a solution to this as well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. At least now I know I am not alone with this problem, Now the only question is how do we get the Plex team to see this and work on a fix?? I have been a PlexPass customer for years and if I have one single complaint its there is no dedicated support channel to reach the Plex team. This forum is great but being able to report problems to a dedicated Plex email would be great…

Exactly why I don’t post most issues. It’s hit or miss on which post gets the needed attention with the numerous requests that get submitted.

Please back down to the Public release 1.10.1 and retest. 1.11.0 is beta. I see a few things I don’t like and would like to eliminate the possibility of a bug in the beta.

I think what mite be part of the response problem is we may not be posting the trouble in the correct section. I posted this under the Synology forums and ChuckPA is already on it. If you wish to follow the progress follow the link below to the post.

I’ll just state that I too have been having the same issue on a Synology DS1815+ running DSM 6.1.4-15217 update 5 and PMS 1.11.0.4666. The same has occurred on an XPEnology DSM 6.x install running PMS 1.11.0.4666.

Its also worth pointing out that this has been the case with every version of Plex Media Server I have tried on the platform so it clearly isn’t an incompatibility with the latest version.

Typically it will run for a few weeks before there is an occurrence. Sometimes it can indeed be addressed by stopping and restarting the Plex package. Sometimes if an updated version of PMS is available its installation will rectify the issue temporarily. If not a reboot will.

I’m unclear on the steps Unalloyedcube outlined but I am willing to give it a try.

Hopefully Plex can address this stability issue in future version.

If everyone is having trouble with the beta 1.11.0,

May I suggest reverting to Public 1.10.1 and seeing is the problem still exists?

This has been an issue with every version of Plex that I have used on Synology hardware and XPEnology builds.

I save the install downloads so that I can easily revert back if there is an unforeseen new issue in a new build. My saved versions are as follows:

PlexMediaServer - 1.1.4.2757
PlexMediaServer - 1.3.3.3148
PlexMediaServer - 1.3.4.3285
PlexMediaServer - 1.4.2.3400
PlexMediaServer - 1.4.4.3495
PlexMediaServer - 1.5.3.3580
PlexMediaServer - 1.5.5.3634
PlexMediaServer - 1.5.6.3790
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.1.3856
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.2.3878
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.3.3937
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.4.4017
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.5.4035
PlexMediaServer - 1.7.6.4058
PlexMediaServer - 1.8.0.4109
PlexMediaServer - 1.8.1.4139
PlexMediaServer - 1.8.3.4235
PlexMediaServer - 1.8.4.4249
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.0.4252
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.4.4325
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.6.4385
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.6.4401
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.7.4441
PlexMediaServer - 1.9.7.4460
PlexMediaServer - 1.10.0.4516
PlexMediaServer - 1.10.0.4523
PlexMediaServer - 1.10.1.4561
PlexMediaServer - 1.10.1.4602
PlexMediaServer - 1.11.0.4633
PlexMediaServer - 1.11.0.4666

All of the above versions has been installed on my Synoloy hardware and all of the above versions have had this issue. Failure usually occurs withing 30 days.

I can downgrade to a Public 1.10.1 version but it wont help this issue because the issue is already known to have occurred in earlier versions. If there were a version that did not do this I would have stuck with it.

@Octavean

It is well known there are two of us who monitor the Synology forums.

If you’ve had this issue through all those versions:

  1. Why did you not report it?
  2. What is so unique to your configuration that it doesn’t work
  3. Why did you not create a new thread for this issue? (you have two open threads, one of which is asking about the new 6-tuner SD box. implying it works for you)

  1. believe I made mention of it in at least one thread beyond this one although that wasn’t a thread I started. I also suspected that Synology wasn’t a popular platform that would likely receive much support with respect to a likely more popular platform like Windows.

  2. I don’t understand the question. Synology hardware is not unique. It’s a stock configuration for the model DS1815+. However, since the issue also occurs on an XPEnology configuration I’ve suspected it was specific to the Synology OS and PMS.

  3. Question 3 is essentially the same question as question 1 or very similar.

Plex does work on the Synology hardware I have used it on. It does crash though, usually within 30 days. Sometimes the package stops on its own and restarting it manually works. Sometimes a manual package restart doesn’t work. I don’t chiefly use Plex for Live TV directly though. In contrast the DVR functionality is more stable then Live TV.

Synology and QNAP are the most popular NAS platforms for Plex without question. If I were to rank their popularity for Plex, 1. Synology, 2 QNAP . This is changing. QNAP has become aggressive and Synology appears to be backing away from the micro-NAS market. They’ve EOL’d video station. Somewhere I read they are going after the enterprise market with multi-petabyte SSD NAS solutions. (target customers being Amazon/Google/et al)

As it pertains to Plex, since having joined the Plex team Dec 2016, I’ve taken over a lot of the internal support . This includes how HW transcoding gets handled as well as the new installer you have (I wrote it)

From the technical perspective, Synology’s Linux is a Debian variant and very much mainstream there. They did customize a few things (as you well know from the XPEnology project’s ‘boot rom’ images and “Synology device” output XPE prints to the console as it starts.

My DS1815+ (Atom C2538) hasn’t been rebooted since the last DSM update. PMS hasn’t crashed or otherwise either. My old DS1813+ (Atom D2700) is now owned by a friend. His is in constant use and, prior to putting in the latest DSM updates, ran for some 3 months without issue / need to restart anything.

I have a vested interest as well as my professional interest in finding out what any issues are and what I can do to resolve them.

That said, to everyone reading here, how can we get this resolved?

Can we start capturing some log file sets and get into the debugging so I can write it up and then resolve myself, if within my authority , or give to Engineering so they can address it?

Sure, I can post some log files. However, I will need to wait for the issue to reoccur before I can capture any useful log data to post.

Whatever it takes, I’ll be here.

I would also like you, with your next post, qualify (explain) what you consider to be a “Crash” . Be as detailed as you need to because “Crash” to some means PMS isn’t responding while to others “Crash” means the PMS server processes have indeed “crashed” (terminated) at the OS level.

Same Problems Here with my DS918+ Recordings are running, but if I watch live TV after som time it stops and The Web-Player Says “Playback Error
This live TV session has ended due to a recording conflict.”. After that Plex Says Couldn’t tune Channel.
i just can restart NAS to view or record TV again. I tested with Plex 1.11 and 1.10. logs are attached.

Hold off on 1.11.0 . There are issues with it (but it’s beta and that can happen).

1.10.1 is best so far.

In your logs, I see a lot of metadata retrieval. Are you adding or rescanning media while playing to iOS, Android, and the Web player? I see the transcoder being invoked to generate the thumbnails. That does put a load on the system. Chapter thumbnails? If you don’t use them you can turn them off to save space and processing power (it is an expensive operation in both departments)

The PMS 1.10.1 logs are from

Dec 10, 2017 02:06:23.279 [0x7fae76f68700] INFO - Plex Media Server v1.10.1.4561-9de2951fc - ubuntu PC x86_64 - build: linux-ubuntu-x86_64 synology - GMT 01:00

Is this correct?

jHello,

yes I added new movies before but this should not be a Problem. After adding movies i can watch a 4k movie without problems. The CPU ihas no problems to convert the thumbs and a Video Stream to my iPhone. I also tested live TV without the HW-Transcoder there was no change. The Live-Tv breaks after some time and just a restard helps.

Yes The logs of Plex 1.10 are from december 2017. I allready posted the problem in an other forum thread.
Now for testing I ewill deactivate the generation of the thumbnails

I am also having this issue and would love to provide whatever information you need. I don’t have exact timing on when the issue kicks in, because I don’t use Live TV a ton, but it seems like it might be in the hours range. Days at the most. Also, my recordings seem to fail. Someone else said recordings work for them, just Live TV doesn’t. For me all TV related things seem to be failing.

I haven’t done much troubleshooting on my own at this point since it isn’t a huge issue for me, but I’d love to do whatever is needed to resolve the issue.

Added note, I am still able to watch TV with the HDHomeRun app when Plex is failing, so it is not the tuner itself that is failing.

NAS: Synology DS916+
DSM version: 6.1.4-15217 Update 5
Tuner: HDHomeRun EXTEND HDTC-2US
Plex version: 1.11.0.4666
Players used: Roku, Xbox, Web, Android
Error when trying to tune in the web browser: “Unable to tune channel (Timed out)”

I’m happy to roll my Plex version back for the heck of it. Do I just install the older version on top of what I currently have installed? Or do I need to do something special?

Let me know what else you need. Thanks!

Hello,

I tested with deactivated thumb generation and the stream breaks up allso. At first I played an SD-Stream and after a Reboot I tryed it again with an HD-Stream. At first all runs fine with hw-transcoding. CPU usage is between 13 and 20 % but after some time the stream breaks up. attached the new log files.

Hello,

after a restart of My NAS the TV-Streaming seems to work fine with deactivated Thump generation and MediaScan all 15 minutes… I added my EyeTV to and can play on two or more devices at the same time.

The only think is that the Eyetv is shown as “Device not found” in LiveTV and DVR Setup options. But i Can view over this tuner.
