We live in Missouri. We have a local Plex Media Server and two remote Plex Media Servers.
The remote PMS are both in New York. All Plex Media Servers have DVR setup. One PMS in New York has HDHomeRun Connect Quad and the other PMS in New York has HDHomeRun Prime.
Whenever my wife tries to watch Live TV from our remote Plex Media Server in NY with the HDHomeRun Prime, the Live Stream dies after about 3 minutes and goes back to the guide. You can retune the channel and it restarts the live stream, but it always aborts after about 3 minutes. We have four NVidia Shield Pro 2019 streaming devices. This happens on all 4 of them.
Watching Live TV from the other remote PMS in NY with the HDHomeRun Connect Quad is fine. Watching Live TV from our local PMS here in Missouri with two HDHomeRun Connect Quads is also fine.
We have plenty of bandwidth at all locations. NY has Verizon FIOS 1 GB internet and here in Missouri we have MediaCom Cable with 300 MB Internet.
We used to switch back to the OLD plex player and then we could watch the HDHomeRun Prime Live TV streams without any problems, but I am told that using the Old player is no longer an option for Live TV. It’s a known issue that was reported at least 4 months ago. Judging by the speed of past bug fixes, we should be able to expect a fix sometime after September of next year.
I have the same issue! It is driving me nuts. I had to switch and use the live streaming software available for the HD Homerun device available from Silicone Dust’s website. It works great, but really Plex needs to fix this.
I sometimes feel Plex updates their software too often. If I have to wait a year for this to get “fixed” that means maybe I’ll have to try a different media server software. It is a shame, I love Plex, just not this “feature”.
Yes, the Silicon Dust software works great for the local HDHomeRun devices. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out a way to use the HDHomeRun View app to get live streams from a remote location.
Had the same problem, Reverting to player version 8.6.0.20351 fixed every problem.
In the settings under advanced: Allow hdmi audio passthrough, and under enable new video player turn to off.
Aptiode tv is an easy way to get this version, Search “Plex” click on the plex icon>click on other versions, and it’s there. Also make sure the shields are set to NOT update the app.
I also have 2 servers, is the only app I have zero problems with for live tv…
Update us
This is why I’m considering not renewing my Plex Pass subscription. They update their software and when bugs are pointed out we here nothing. It is very disappointing.
Some great information here. I have a Roku and it works flawlessly and streams without interruption. I use my Shield most of the time, so I have to switch over to the Roku just to stream live HD Homerun TV.
I also installed Jellyfin on my server and it runs along with Plex on the same box without issue. Maybe we here nothing about this issue because their people are busy working on the streaming TV service and options that are now integrated into Plex. Stuff that I don’t care about. If they can’t be bothered to give us a timeline on the fix, then why use Plex and pay for it?
I have confirmed that I was able to download Plex for Android version 8.6.0.20351 from the link in the forum post.
I removed the current version and installed the older version. I enabled HDMI Audio passthrough and also set Enable New Video Player to off. I also changed the Shield to NOT update apps automatically.
We are now able to view Live TV from our Remote Plex Server with HDHomeRun Prime without any interruptions.
My wife will be so happy that she can once again watch CNN Live and in Real Time!!!
Yes hours at a time for me, with zero interuptions. I was getting so frustrated with it not working, that I downloaded every player one by one, giving each a 2 week trial. Lol Without question 8.6.0.20351 is the best.
Glad it helped.
You’re right Probably a better Idea to download the app from Plex.
You may or may not know this, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. You can browse the other channels without leaving the show you are watching by pressing down on the remote twice. A feature that I miss when not using new player is the is the minimized video player while browsing.
It sounds like the channel is not being picked up on the server. On the dashboard do you see the channel actually running when you’re watching live TV for that 3 minutes? If not try out this APK it was made by one of the Plex employees, it fixed the issue on the mibox which also had that issue. This will allow you to use the new video player as well, it is a little bit older APK though.
I’m glad there is a fix for this. However, I feel it should be properly fixed by Plex. I’m using Jellyfin as well, and it works fine. One thing I like about Jellyfin is there is no extra nonsense packaged in with their media server. No “free tv”, “Arcade game streaming”, or “Webshows”. I keep thinking this bug would get fixed sooner if they didn’t spend so much time working on these “freatures” I don’t need or want.
Not sure you can stream HD Homerun TV from one location to another. I don’t need to do that.
