Live TV crashing Plex Media Server Version 1.41.7.9823

Server Version#: 1.41.7.9823[smb] (Shield-only)
Player Version#: various (see below)
Tuner Make/Model: HDHomeRun Dual
Guide/Lineup name: local TV.
Using XMLTV?: No.
Channel number/Name: Any.

In the last week of May 2025, we started seeing a frequent error while live streaming local TV from the Plex Media Server on our Shield Pro 2019:

“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”

Didn’t matter which channel. It would start up OK, and play for between 5-30 or so minutes before taking the error.

Didn’t matter which streaming player, Roku, Android TV, phone app, the error would happen.

All of our Rokus and the Shield are on Ethernet, but those and the wifi devices running Plex (phone and Chromecast with Google TV) took the same error.

Noted that the PMS version active on Shield, 1.41.7.9823(smb), had been updated on May 24, which tallied with the onset of the error.

Looked at the Plex Server logs. The reason for the message appeared to be that the Plex software thought that the HDHomeRun tuner was not responding, so it was taken offline.

You could still start the channel again and it would work for awhile, but stop with the error message.

I set up the Emby live TV feature on a Win11 PC making no changes in the network or devices. It was able to play normally using the same HDHomeRun tuner with no errors on several players.

That eliminated the HDHomeRun being the problem.

Then I set up PMS (version 1.41.7.9823 for 64-bit, no “smb”) on yet another PC (Win10), and live TV again worked without error.

This strongly suggests that the PMS software version running on the Shield is the problem. The “smb” version says it is only for the Shield.

Crossposted on the Nvidia forum. I have logs if someone wants to see them.

After upgrading to the most recent PMS Version 1.41.7.9823 Live TV crashes after watching. No exact time, it differs. Any Live TV which is being recorded then also fails and restarts after a short while.

Logs available here and I also have verbose logs available of it happening at a different time as well:

Watching the console, just before it crashes the Live TV the following message was displayed:

I’m having the same problem. I’ve posted in the Plex media server section and provided logs. I’ve rebuilt PMS and it still happens.

@BigWheel tagging for oversight as hopefully with the logs it’s able to be pinpointed what the issue is.

@BigWheel is there anything in the logs? I notice someone else is having the same issue.

Before I saw your posts today, I also uninstalled/reinstalled PMS on the Shield, set it all up again, and the problem is still there.

I wonder if we can get any traction from Plex on this because I’ve commented on two posts and nothing. Live TV is unwatchable for any length of period.

I wonder if the problem is related to the “USB TV Tuner fix with Live Channel app” on the last Shield update…

Mine was happening before I did the update so I don’t think it’s related to that. It’s very much aligned to the last Plex Media Server update. My Shield sits up in the loft so only gets updated once or twice a year (if there are updates) and I did the update only after this issue started occurring

Yeah, I moved back to an old Optiplex PC to provide our Plex live TV. No problem at all with it.

It was a slight surprise to learn that a Plex server and an Emby server could use the same HDHomeRun. It doesn’t care, it hands out a tuner to whichever server asks for it.

I had set the HDHomeRun’s “BDA Compatibility Mode” to “Emby”. Apparently it doesn’t matter.

@Justina_plex hoping you can help as I’ve seen you post on Plex New Experience. If not, if you can point someone in the right direction if this. Logs have been posted already and can provide more. Makes watching Live TV impossible for any length of time.

@gbooker02 I’ve seen a new version of Plex Media Server has been released but it hasn’t fixed the issue we are experiencing. Are you able to shed any light as to whether this has been picked up by Plex? I can provide more logs if need be. There’s a link to my post with the logs here: Live TV crashing Plex Media Server Version 1.41.7.9823

The post mentions the latest version of PMS but the beta also had the same issue.

Moved the two posts into one. Hope that was Ok. Grabbing logs and attempting to reproduce on my Shield. Thanks for reporting this issue.

Thanks for looking into it. Not an expert at all in the PMS logs but I’ve seen this message occur when the crash happened. Could be unrelated.

@tulsatv if you have logs, please share them.

@gunnersboy and @tulsatv is your tuner connected directly to your Shield’s via USB?

@Atomatth depends what you class as directly connected. It doesn’t go into a hub but because of the port configuration and the other USB ports being used on the Shield and the size of the TV tuner, I have a small USB A extension cable which the tuner is plugged into. I can’t plug directly into the shield as the TV tuner would then stop any hard drives being plugged into the other ports.

I have verbose logging logs if you need them?

Errr, yeah, are you accessing your Tuner via USB . Sounds like, yes. What do you see when you view the DVR manage page in your browser?

From the logs it looks like the connection to your tuner is dropping. Can you manually trigger a Guide Refresh? As you can see in my picture my tuner is a network device. I’ll have to see if I have a USB tuner to better match the setup for reproducing the issue.

OK, so yes, connected via USB. The DVR page is as follows:

I can manually trigger a refresh, and as soon as the drop happens, I can go back to the guide, load the channel up and it works straight away. Looking at the initial post by @tulsatv they are using HDHomeRun whereas I’m using the hauppauge tv tuner

My HDHomeRun Dual tuner is connected only via Ethernet. That is how I am able to successfully use it for live TV/DVR on both a Win10 Plex server and a Win11 Emby server. Only fails with Shield.
