I have two Plex servers running on separate ubuntu 20.03 servers. Both Plex servers are on the latest Plex version.
The issue began when Plex on Roku was upgraded to improve the “Live TV & DVR” menu which now shows both of my Plex servers horizontally above the guide data plus several other Plex selected options. I actually like this new look, except that it is impossible to set a recording or manage a recording schedule for a specific Plex server even though it is selected on the horizontal menu above the guide.
I’ve tried removing one of the servers under “Manage Guide Source” to no avail. That is with only Plex Server 1 showing and selected, recordings are set to go on Plex Servers 2. I’ve verified this via the Plex Media Player on my Mac. I also renamed the library folder for recorded TV on each server to be distinctive of the other server so I can see it when setting up or managing a DVR schedule.
Before removing one Plex server from Guide Sources, I tried working with the favorites tab which is a nice feature, but doesn’t appear to work properly. I added a couple of channels from only one server to favorites just to play with the feature. Again it looks like when I added a recording, it adds the recording schedule for that program to both servers at the same time - at least via the guide it show as being recorded by both servers. I think that’s because of the issue described above, I see the schedule for Plex Server 2 even when Plex server 1 is selected.
Adding a recording using the favorites tab does not update the guide for either Plex server unless you go back to Roku home and restart roku. But it still is hit or miss on completely updating the guide for both servers. Also if you add a recording on a selected Plex Server tab, it doesn’t appear on the favorites tab for that program.
After upgrading to Roku release 7.0.3, Live TV & DVR for each Plex Server properly manages the recording schedule for the selected Plex server. The recording schedule also appropriately updates the grid when switching between Plex Servers.
The only thing I noticed now is that I cannot add any channels to favorites. The only choice is manage favorites, but selecting it alerts you that no channels have been added.
An update. I found that a newly adding recording via Roku shows the record symbol on that time slot as it should. I can also see it set up to record on the Plex Media Player on my Mac. However while on Roku I switched Plex servers on the tab and then go back to the original Plex server tab a short while later, and go back to the same show I had recently added for recording, it no longer shows the record icon on that time slot. Also when I click on the show in Roku, it is as if I hadn’t set it up at all. When I looked at it on Plex Media Play on my Mac it properly shows as a recording schedule.
Other existing DVR programs I’ve set to record are ok - they show up correctly in Roku. It just the newly added ones that don’t. It doesn’t matter which client I used to set up the recording. Maybe there is a refresh time lag that I just need to be aware of on the Roku. As long as I don’t switch Plex servers in Roku or leave the scheduler, the recording icon seems to remain on a program. It’s only after I switched Plex Servers on the tab or leave Live TV & DVR that the recording information and icon seem lost. Again the Mac still shows it like it should. Thanks
I further tested programming Live TV & DVR via Roku client. I waited for a refresh period overnight and it had no effect on the Roku client properly showing a recording schedule saved via the Roku or Mac Plex client.
I can see the show recording schedule on the Mac Plex client for either “all episodes” or by “event” but the Roku Plex client loses the information once you switch Plex Servers in the Live TV & DVR tab or go back to the main menu. I tried rebooting the Roku but it still fails to show that recording schedule.
Since I can’t tell if a program has actually been set up to record via the Roku Plex client, I attempted to add a recording on a program that I know was going to be recorded (via the Mac Plex client). The record icon went from triple record symbol to a single icon. So on the Mac client, I deleted the recording. I was surprised that after deleting the single event, the program icon switched to the triple record symbol.
The main take away is that the Roku Plex client does not reflect any of the changes I made on the Mac Plex client (or Roku Plex client for that matter) even though I refreshed it by switching Plex Servers or going to the main menu and back or by restarting the Roku.
