Plex Player - Local TV & DVR item is gone - Can't get OTA channels on my ROKU devices

Server Version#: Plex Media Server version = 1.21.1.3876
Not sure about my ROKU version

Incidentally, there are updates available, but I hesitate doing that because on a couple of occasions, I had problems with Plex after installing an update.

Problem … The Live TV and DVR library item is no longer displayed on my list of libraries when I’m using my Plex app on my ROKU device. This is normally where I watch channels that are coming in from my outside antenna. The Live TV DVR item is gone, and Instead have two Live TV items, instead of a “Live TV & DVR” and “Live TV”. (Live TV is where you watch the channels provided by Plex). Since Live TV and DVR is gone, I can’t watch my TV channels from the antenna (nor can I record OTA programs) within the Plex app on my ROKU device any longer. The Plex Media server appears to be unaffected. I believe I can select and record programs from the Live TV & DVR library on my Plex Media Server running on my PC.

This has been happening for 2 days now. Local TV and DVR just disappeared all of a sudden. Has Plex made a change to its ROKU app to remove this item that appears on the left hand sidebar in the ROKU app? If so, has any provision been made to allow selecting OTA antenna programs for watching and/or recording from the ROKU app? In other words, do i need to go to a different library to access the antenna channels? Or do I need to do something in Plex Media server on my PC where my HDHomerun devices are connected? I’d love to get the TV channels back so I can continue to record programs off the antenna.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There has been updates that combine Live TV and TV/DVR in to one list. Look under live TV, once there above the guide you should see your server name and that is where TV channels are. You can now create favorite from both Plex and TV/DVR in one list.

If you don’t see your server name then you click the 3 dots on the left of Live TV then go to Personalize then go to Manage Guide Sources.

Same exact problem here. I am able to see my server listed in the guide, but no channels are listed. All it says is "Your Guide is empty. Please verify your channel mappings and refresh the guide.

From a PC I logged into Plex and refreshed my guide and I still get the same result. I don’t see a way to refresh the guide from a Roku interface.

I have the same problem. I can see my DVR channels on my Android phone, PC, and Fire tablet. But not on the Roku.

As I said in my original post, Plex Media Server says there are updates. I haven’t done one in awhile. I’m currently running Plex Media Server version = 1.21.1.3876. My problem sounds exactly like “uhmjeff”'s description.

  1. I see the “Live TV” library on the left side of the Plex app on my ROKU.
  2. I click that and I see the grid of content options. I see “Plex Channels” tab and I also see the tab with my server name
  3. If I click on my server name, it tells me “Your guide data is empty” and that I should refresh the Guide data. I don’t see any place to do that in Plex on the ROKU app.

I was wondering if refreshing guide data on the Plex Media Server on my PC would solve the problem, but uhmjeff says that he tried that and it didn’t work. And I too don’t see a way to refresh the guide data on the Plex app that runs on the ROKU.

I had this problem with my Hisense Roku TV - the “Live TV & DVR” did not show up in the new integrated guide for managed users. Uninstalling the Plex app from the Roku TV and reinstalling it fixed the problem for me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried that but it didn’t help.

Is there a particular version of Plex Media Server that you need in order to make this work on the remote ROKU device? I ask that because I haven’t done a PMS update and yet this behavior showed up on my ROKU device. I’m a bit hesitant to update PMS because the last time I tried, it broke things. Let me know if there are any details I should be aware of, and thanks in advance.

Not sure if you need a specific media server version, my server version is 1.25.6.5577.

If you don’t see your server name then you click the 3 dots on the left of Live TV then go to Personalize then go to Manage Guide Sources.

My condolences to those on the Roku clients where this isn’t working. I had the pleasure of stopping by my mothers house where I physically had to setup and show her what’s been changed. She understands and really enjoys this new All in one approach, so mom approved here, but I personally was skeptical of this rollout. Only time will tell if this is going to improve or implode.

On Roku, Sign out and then Sign in again. The Live TV comes back.

Or it’s under “More” at the bottom of the left hand column where everything that’s unpinned resides.

I had the same problem as others, “no guide data” and no live local tv, only plex live tv

I had to do 2 things:

  1. upgrade to 1.25 version (I was on 1.20 and signing out/signing in didnt help)
→ after upgrade alone, still no guide data

  2. I signed out/signed in and live tv guide was back

OK I have an update.

I was on my TV with my ROKU connected to it. I tried signing out of PLEX per your suggestion, then followed the directions to sign back and relink to my server. I entered the 4 character code and my Plex app came back. I had to choose my server and the libraries I wanted to have. Then Plex came back, and I clicked on Live TV, got the display, clicked on my server name, and got the error message … “No guide data - Please refresh your guide data” … just like before. But there’s more … keep reading

I then noticed at the top of the screen there are three menu items … GUIDE, DVR SCHEDULE, and BROWSE. I got curious about Browse so I clicked on it. Plex presents me with programs I can watch. I clicked on one and it opens up the details about the program. I select one of the recorded programs and it starts playing it. THEN IT GOT REAL INTERESTING.

I click my back button to get out of the playing program and LO AND BEHOLD, I’m returned to my TV guide!!! Soooo … the message about “no guide data” must be wrong, because this guide that I’m returned to appears to have all my local channels from my antenna. And I appear to be able to click on something and watch it. Don’t know what Plex needs to do, but if the guide data is really there, and it appears to be, Plex needs to investigate why, when you first get into Live TV and click on your server name (and my Plex Media Server name is displayed) it returns the message “Please refresh your guide data”. It looks like the guide data is there … Plex just needs to find it and display your local channels when you click on the server name. Hope this helps.

Update:

I tried all of the above and what ended up working for me was what dustin_grant mentioned. I was previously on Plex Version 1.21 on CentOS 7. After updating CentOS and upgrading Plex to Version 1.25 followed by signing out and back in I was able to get my guide back on the Roku devices.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to make suggestions as well as update progress on what worked and didn’t work so we can all benefit from these steps. Cheers…

Guide is broken for me. I tried everything in here and even tried a fresh install of plex server. Just says “The Guide is empty - Please verify your channel mappings and refresh the Guide” and I’ve checked on multiple devices (browser, android mobile, android tv) and nothing works.

Wow, reading the above post is like reliving my past 24 hrs on Plex (no more OTA live TV & VCR menu, then I find the new combined live menu, then no local OTA live TV souce option on the new combined menu, login/logout/restart/reboot/upgrade, then OTA source shows up but no guide data. …and so on.). My OTA source now shows up and the guide is populated BUT now I have constant OTA buffering problems followed by a “Playback Error” message. My buffering problem is unique to OTA live TV playback (via HDHomerun); I don’t have any buffering problems for any other playback options (including Plex live TV ) and have never had any buffering problems until now. Hopefully Plex will get these Live TV Guide premature rollout issues resolved and we can find PLEX Live TV usable again.

OTA TV via HDHomerun

Since this change is so huge, I think Plex should have made the switch in the following way …

  1. Keep the Live TV & DVR button on the left side panel available and keep that option working
  2. Add the Live TV button and make TV available per what they’re doing now.
  3. Plex should have given themselves say 30 or 60 days to get this working after rollout. The old method wouldn’t be turned off for that period. If they’re having bugs during that time, then people can still fall back to getting OTA the way they know how to do. And if it does work, then they just turn it off after the 30 or 60 days. The old Live TV & DVR option on the left hand side panel goes away at that point.

I do think that the idea of integrating the Plex channels and your OTA channels is a good idea. I think, however, that Plex might have saved themselves some headaches if they’d have done the rollout a little differently.

Hopefully Plex is reading these posts and maybe this idea is worth considering. What does everyone else thing about this approach?
