Live TV Playback Stops Suddenly

Seeing the same issue with latest few versions of Plex with playback on my Fire Stick 4K as well. I have rolled back to 1.19.5.3112 which is the latest version in which LiveTV\DVR wasn’t a disaster, at least for me.

Have you set up / checked your local subnet in your Plex Server -> Settings -> “LAN Networks”?

I made a major network change on my LAN. I had to switch to a new subnet due to a VPN conflict. I thought I had made all the IP address changes needed on Plex Server. Then live TV on my Shield TV Pro (only TV I use) started cutting out every few minutes. Recordings were all recording correctly and playing back no problem. Then I noticed on my dashboard that all my traffic was “remote”. I discovered I forgot to change the LAN subnet in the Plex Server settings. Once I updated those two fields with my new subnet the Playback on Live TV issue went away.

This is very frustrating for sure. Live TV plays over LAN but not remotely. As others have stated, it will work anywhere from 1 minute to sometimes up to 30 minutes and stop anywhere in between. Tried on multiple devices and all stop playing abruptly.

Having what seems like the same issue. Live TV cuts out after a few minutes and returns to the guide. This appears to be isolated to the plex app on Amazon FireTV stick. I have no issues with LiveTV using a browser on my laptop or the plex app on my android phone. Also can confirm that i can watch live directly from the HDHomeRun (no plex) without issue.

Not sure what to look for exactly but this is what i see in the PMS log around the time of the issue

Update for more testing oh yea,
Maybe a few other people will try this as well. Pick the channel you are having trouble then go back to the guide menu where you still see that channel. I bet it does not stop working at all. I ran this test on all the channels that I have trouble no issue watching the channel in the guide menu will not freeze. Also reading about the tv atsc 3.0 tuner maybe this is the issue here because HDHomeRun boxes do use this it is for the 4K over the air upgrade that a few channels have started to use.

Also Delete DVR and re-setup it up same issue

Try the new 1.21.1.3876-3c3adfcb4 January 5, 2021 media server for Linux Dedian 8+ 64bit same issue no change.

Had the same issue.
I believe It’s coming from the fire tv 4k player.
The only version that works for fire tv live tv is 8.6.0.20351
In order for this to work, go to player settings>advanced>allow HDMI passthrough> then turn “enable new video player” to off.

Should work fine with this version.

I play for hours both locally an remotely with this version with no problems in playback.

Easiest way for me to get this version is
Downloader>open url> ENTER https://m.aptoide.com/installer-aptoide-tv
Then seach Plex>click on Plex icon>SELECT other versions> SELECT version 8.6.0.20351

Obviously uninstall your current player first. Also goto fire tv settings>applications>appstore> TURN OFF Automatic updates.

If you dont do this fire tv will update it to a different player.

I’ve found that the issues with playback of live TV all are with the client in question, not necessarily the server/source. Android clients appear to be the worst with the exception of picture in picture where while in the small screen I don’t have any sudden stops at all. Only frustrating part other than this is now ongoing more than 6 months even following a complete server rebuild is I don’t see logs reporting an error, simply that the stream closed.

I have same issues on both of mine nvidia shield, has anyone got responses from plex team

I have the Nvidia Shield with HDHomeRun Tuners. I had a 1 year Plex Pass Subscription last year and didn’t have this problem where I get booted out of an OTA Live TV show until recently. This issue never happens watching OTA channels using my Channels App.

When I received the notification of the Guide change, I decided to upgrade my PLEX Pass to the Life time version and began the DVR replacement. In addition to completing the DVR replacement process, I decided to “tweak” other PLEX Server settings I thought would be useful. I believe this issue begin after “tweaking” other PLEX Server settings but I don’t know which.

Does anyone from PLEX monitor these forums and is there a way to get Support directly from PLEX. I want to know what the process is to start completely over. i.e. reset my PLEX Server settings to original “factory” settings without deleting my account.

Yes; absolutely. I’m streaming from my HDHomeRun right now to a Kindle, and the dashboard shows nothing is playing. It does, however, show that it is recording live TV.

If I connect to Plex via a browser window I can watch live TV indefinitely. But if I connect using the Android app on some devices the stream only lasts 3-ish minutes before it kicks me back to the Guide screen.

For me it’s only live TV. If I watch a show recorded via Plex DVR it works just fine. Movies, etc. that are on my NAS (running everything via Synology DS920+) that works fine regardless of playback method.

I just don’t get it.

Also a newbie. I am having multiple issues with local Kansas City channels as well. Do you know if there is anyone in KC that I could pay to refine my set up?

You’re not going to be able to pay somebody to fix the bugs in Plex. Try using Channels DVR or Emby for live tv.

Sadly, with over two years of trying to get the Live TV/DVR to work reliably, I’m afraid CodeCat5 is right.

I use something else as well and only re-install the Plex DVR every couple of months for kicks just to confirm how awful it still is.

They don’t even fix the incredibly stupid things like only having 7 days in the guide drop down when there’s two weeks of EPG data there.

And you can pretty much forget about watching a program that is still recording – quite often, you have to wait until recording is completely done before you can start watching.

Where is the Plex support? Did I miss where a Plex employee has responded?

Plex does not provide support, and their employees have made it abundantly clear that fixing bugs has never been a priority for them.

Then I guess I’ll make it abundantly clear to Plex that I won’t renew my subscription!

This will fix your problems on Android players.

Download and install player version 8.6.0.20351 from here.

Once installed goto the player advanced settings. Allow HDMI Audio Passthrough, Then Also under Advanced. Change Enable New Video Player to OFF.

Hope this helps, I dealt with these problems for over a year trying everything until I found this. Plays perfectly with this version.

Since I use the Google Chromecast TV option can not use the HDMI Audio Passthrough no audio. Did try the Advanced option Change Enable New Video Player to off this did work could watch any channel with no issues now. I did have the option to record as well. Could see the Dashboard showing the Channel I was watching as well. This seem to be a key point well at least for me using the Google Chromecast TV option.

Glad to hear it.
Yes, it must have to with how the new player/app is requesting information or communicating with the server.
