If I copy my video files which are multiple types, crime, drama, comedy, etc, to the Plex folder, can I than add a shortcut to folders for each movie type?

The /Plex (DSM 6) and /PlexMediaServer (DSM 7) shared folders are reserved for use by the Plex Media Server application. Place no files there. It will impact correct operation of Plex Media Server.

Review these documents regarding running PMS on Synology NAS:

Name and organize your media files per Plex requirements: Plex DocumentationYour Media.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding and I will look at the links.

My understanding is that a Plex folder needs to be created as a repository for video files, which is outside of the system files folders.

I know there are multiple video files folders that can be created within the interface, and I just wanted to know if videos are placed in one folder for a view all, and considering, or at least it appears to be, one can have a tree of video folders, can I than categorized by movie genre and just place the video file as a shortcut in the folder (say comedy) and it will redirect the selection to the primary folder with all videos?

No. You do not create it.

Plex will create what it needs.

DSM 6 – will have a “Plex” shared folder for its internal use
DSM 7 – will have a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder for its internal use

This was done

  1. To make backups easy
  2. To allow manual retrieval of log files easy should PMS fail to start.

When you put media on the NAS, recommendation is to create either:

Style 1-

Media/
  Moviees/
  Music/
  TV/
  .
  .
  .

Style2:

Movies/

Music/

TV/

other top-level shared folders as needed

Please consider my ‘movies’ shared folder:

When you install Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS, it will create a /Plex or /PlexMediaServer shared folder. That folder contains the database and other files used by the application. You cannot place any media files in that folder.

In addition, it is recommended you do not use the pre-defined media folders created by Synology - /movies, /photos, etc. Those folders are used by Synology applications. In theory, it is OK to place your files there. In reality, Synology apps have a nasty habit of resetting file permissions which stops Plex Media Server from begin able to access the files.

It is also not recommended to place media files in the /homes or /home directory. The issue is that when a username is deleted from the system, Synology removes the corresponding home directory. This can lead to accidental erasure of media files. It is a precaution, not a hard requirement.

What many people do is to create a new shared folder (ex: /media) to hold the media files, with sub-folders for the media type.

Example:

/media
  /movies
  /tv shows
  /personal videos
  /music

You do not need to separate your media by genre, but can do so if you wish. The Plex user apps have the capability to sort by genre if you wish.

I do keep some of my media sorted by genre, specifically tv shows. It works for how I want to organize things.

There is a lot of freedom in how you organize your media. Obey the basic rules and you’ll be OK. Review the “Installation & Setup…” document. That will give you a good overview of things.

Example: Here’s a partial view of my media folders:

/media
/movies <-- added to Movies library
    /Airplane (1980)
      /Airplane (1980).mkv
/tv <-- added to TV Shows library
    /Archer (2009)
      /Season 01
        /Archer (2009) s01e01.mkv
  /tv-scifi <-- added to TV-SciFi library
    /The Mandelorian (2019)
      /Season 01
        The Mandelorian (2019) s01e01.mkv

Roger that on the aditionall link. Thank you.

I appreciate the input. Finishing up some remodeling around the house, and once completed, I will order the NAS.

Doing my best to get out in front of the set-up. Between the links and input, it’s a great start.

Again; Thank you
