Looking for help with setting up a new DS918+ for use with PMS on a Nvidia Shield

Greetings!

I’m sure this has been covered before, but I am struggling to get the answers I need.

I am new to the NAS world - OK on Windows PC’s! New DS918+ NAS has two 8TB drives in it set to SHR1.

I’ve created a Media folder on the NAS and have my Movies and TV shows in folders under it - these all worked well on the PC PMS.

I thought I was doing well… PLEX on iPhone and PC could play a movie from the Shield PLEX media server but when trying to play a movie/show with the Shield PLEX player, it could not. Kept crashing the PLEX player, where the Shield PLEX player app would just go back to the PLEX user log on.

Struggling to say the least, even though I understand the basics.

It’s not easy - now the Server tab under Settings has disappeared on the Web app.

If anyone can offer any guidance, I’d appreciate it.

Firstly, I need to get the DS918+ set up right for storing my PLEX media and allow the Shield PLEX app to access it! Thanks in advance.

Morning,

Last night I deleted all Devices from Plex, moved Movies and TV from my existing folder (“Plex Media”) to a new folder, “Media” (not that this should make any difference!), created a new User on the Synology NAS, “Plex” which also had read/write permissions.

On Shield, I closed the NAS share and re-did it using new User (“Plex”). Added Movies and TV libraries and left it running over night.

All seems good this morning - its working! Strange.

For info, I had enabled SMB and its on the same workgroup my house is on.

SMB was already enabled SMB from a post that I read previously.

NFS was not enabled - I have enabled it now, but not NFS4.1 support, as I don’t understand that, yet. To be honest, I don’t really know what SMB and NFS other than what I have found on the internet - could you give me some pointers.

Should I consider any NAS options - a lot of options to tick/enable.

Apologies, but this is new to me and I want to do it right and learn from this. I am more than sure the settings on the NAS aren’t exactly right!

Wonder if I will be able to access when away from the home… leave that to another day!! (At least there is a green tick on Plex next to Remote Access! - that’s a good start!)

Thanks.

Thanks very much.
All going well so far - long may it last.
Understood about all the various protocols - thanks.
My router already had a port open for Plex and seems to be fine.

Thanks for your help.

As you as Synology savvy, as I’m a seafarer, if I need to access NAS, say to download a movie so my family can view it on the above set up, is it best just to use the QuickConnect or would you suggest another means?

Thanks again for your help.

I grabbed this from my router - I don’t recall choosing these values. Should the external ports both be 50000?

And this from Plex:

Would you say no need to alter anything as PLEX is using same external port as router?

Thanks again
All understood - time to enjoy.
