QNAP TS 251+
I had made a choice to stay on version 4.3.6 after all of the problems that were encountered when 4.4.1 was first released. I made this decision based solely on the ability to continue to use openPHT. I now need to update to a newer firmware version since I am starting to lose support and access based on out of date firmware/software. I had followed a thread when 4.4.1 was released and (I believe) ChuckPA was working with QNAP on a solution, That thread ended up with a stable version to use after QNAP and Plex got things fixed. I cannot locate that thread (after about 3 hrs of searching) and don’t want to update and have problems. My server is suggesting version 4.5.1.1495. So what is the most stable firmware version to use?
The latest is stable however much of the issues after 4.3.6 were associated with RAM. Once I made sure my TS-453Be had the correct QNAP ram in it it worked very well. Many QNAPs ship with aftermarket ram if you do not buy from QNAP.
The versions after 4.3.6 were / are much more sesitive to what ram is used.
Back when I bought my server I also upgraded the RAM, both bought from Amazon. The RAM I bought is Crucial 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) DDR3L-1600 SODIMM
CT2KIT51264BF160B
This memory is listed as compatible on the Crucial site. Do you know if their compatibility list is reliable, or does the memory need to be Qnap brand? This memory has been the machine since new in Feb 2018 with no issues.
May I ask we get the issue of firmware sorted BEFORE talking about which vendor’s RAM to buy?
I am running 4.4.3.1439
I am not yet convinced the 4.5.1 train is sufficiently stable.
Speaking of the user-added RAM,
I recommend matching the QNAP-provided RAM spec.
This means pulling it out, finding the OEM, and getting the same specs.
Inserting RAM with different specs (voltage, RAS/CAS, etc) will cause problems.
I had not heard about RAM causing issues with the Qnap and Plex problems that started occurring after 4.3.6 and I was posting which RAM I bought and installed almost 3 years ago. I’m not looking to buy RAM, but I still have the RAM that came in my machine when I bought it. I was mostly wondering if I should go ahead and update firmware with the RAM that has been in the server since Feb 2018 or put the original RAM in to update the firmware.
