Lousy playback quality of torrents on 4k LG TV

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#:Unknown, Downloaded today on LG webOs if that helps

Hi.

I’m hoping there’s an easy answer to this as I’m VERY green when it comes to setting up Plex as usually, I’ve just had to install it and it all works fine.

Anyway, easy description is that I can copy any of my video torrents to a USB Flash Drive (720p, 1080p or 2160p versions) and it plays perfectly acceptably on my new TV. (LG 65SM8600) However, when I try to play the same file through Plex over my network (1Gbps) the picture quality is absolutely terrible, almost unwatchable. I didn’t have this problem on my old Samsung Full HD set.

Does anyone know if this is this a settings issue or is Plex not too good with LG TV’s ?

TIA for any advice :+1:

I have a 2018 LG and it works fine with almost all content.

In the Plex LG app settings you should have Quality set on Original, direct play and direct stream enabled. Depending on your LG the audio settings all codecs should be enabled if a recent model.

Thanks for the reply SE56. Those settings are all applied in the player on the TV. It’s a 2019 Nano-Cell so a recent model.

Unfortunately, being a Plex apprentice I don’t really know where to look. I’m guessing it’s a processing issue coz it works absolutely perfectly via the USB stick ?

Thanks anyway. :slightly_smiling_face:

In the server you will find an area called the dashboard/ activity, when playing the title it will tell you if it is trans coding.

Also are you watching this remotely?

Transcoder settings

Thanks again SE56. In the activity area, it shows both audio and video transcoded.

Not sure exactly what you mean by watching this remotely but the TV is on my home 1Gbps network as is the pc that I store the files on and run Plex.

Attached screenshot of my Transcode settings. I don’t appear to have the hardware acceleration option. PC is i7-3770 CPU, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD C: Drive & 2 X 4TB WD Red HDD’s in RAID 1 (Mirror) for Storage if that helps.

Ok it’s transcoding can you send a screen shot of a troublesome file whilst playing on the LG from the dashboard.

Example:

27 am

Haha, just thinking you may need that so was sorting one when you replied:-

Did notice that the audio part was now playing direct, although it definitely starts as transcoding ?

Just realised that there’s an exclamation mark against the Plex logo !

Do you have the LG setting for manual server as your Server LAN IP and port 32400.

In the server setting / network/ secure connections preferrred

Also in the LG settings under Main scroll to the bottom

Allow fallback to Insecure Connections Always

Prefer Insecure Connections on same Network as server

I’ve just entered them into the LG settings - didn’t have an entry in the LAN IP box but did mention 32400 port number.

The server does say secure connections preferred.

Allow Insecure Fallback changed to Always, Insecure Connections was as suggested.

Now see if that file plays to local IP now

SE56 YOU ARE A STAR !!!

Working perfectly now, thank you very much, much appreciated.:+1:

Ping me by messenger if you run into metadata issues etc.

You were running Plex remotely.

Your welcome, enjoy you Plex now

It also would not hurt adding your subnet mask / into server’s Network setting and save.
