Matching error for "Suicide Squad (2016)" and "The Suicide Squad (2021)"

I have “Suicide Squad (2016).mp4” already in my library. I just created “The Suicide Squad (2021).mp4”.

When I drop “The Suicide Squad (2021).mp4” in my media folder and I tell Plex Server to Scan Library Files it finds it with no problems.

But when I select it and tell it to ‘Match’ it for some reason merges/overwrites “Suicide Squad (2016).mp4” in the library.

So if I now select “Suicide Squad (2016).mp4” in the library it has the image for “The Suicide Squad (2021).mp4”. Also, if I edit it and look at the Info tab for files it shows BOTH “Suicide Squad (2016).mp4” and “The Suicide Squad (2021).mp4”.

How do I get the newer movie into the library as its own entry?

Are you keeping each movie in a separate folder, as per the directions?

Option 1: Add IMDB (or TMDB) ID to folder & file name

Add the IMDB ID to the folder & file name for each movie. See the document @nx6 linked for details. Plex will use the ID instead of the folder/file name when matching the movies.

Then Plex Dance both movies, returning them to the library one at a time.

Note: You must be using the Plex Movie scanner and agent. The other scanners & agents will not pick up the IMDB/TMDB ID from the folder/file name.


Option 2: Split Apart / Fix Match

You should also be able to choose Split Apart then Fix Match. When performing Fix Match, if the listed movies are incorrect, choose Search Options. Use the IMDB ID as the title and leave the year blank. That should give you the correct match.

I don’t put my movies in separate directories. But I do follow the directions at that link that says:

Stand-Alone Movie Files

If you wish, you can also put movie files next to each other in a main folder. The structure isn’t important unless you have custom media (e.g. posters) for a particular movie. To correctly name a movie file, name it as follows:

  • MovieName (release year).ext

But thank you for providing the link. I had forgotten about using imdb or tmdb. I am going to try that now.

Well, adding the imdb for The Suicide Squad (2021) {imdb-tt6334354} did not work. It still got merged into Suicide Squad (2016).

I had to split them apart. Then I removed both of them from my Plex movies folder, did a scan for files to get the entries removed.

Added the imdb for Suicide Squad (2016) so I now had:

Suicide Squad (2016) {imdb-tt1386697}.mkv
The Suicide Squad (2021) {imdb-tt6334354}.mkv

Copied the 2021 into the Plex folder first and had it scan files. It correctly found 2021.
Then copied the 2016 into the Plex folder and had it scan files. It correctly found 2016.

Thanks for the info on split. I had never tried that before. Both files are showing up correctly in Plex now.
