Media does not play - everything else works (Qnap TS412 PMS, Win8 Pconnect, ATV3)

Hi,

  • Your ATV model (2 or 3) and firmware version (found under the ATV settings > general > about > Apple TV software): ATV 3  running 5.3

  • The DNS server set on the ATV (found under the ATV settings > general > network > DNS): 192.168.0.165

  • The device and operating system (including version number) that PlexConnect is installed on: Desktop PC, windows 8 pro 64b Intel Core2 1.86Ghz 4GB ram

  • The local IP address of the device that PlexConnect is installed on: 192.168.0.165

  • The device and operating system (including version number) that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on: Qnap TS421  FW: 3.7.1 Build 20120615

  • The Plex media server (PMS) version number you are running (**do not put 'latest'**): 0.9.7.28.3

  • The local IP address of the device that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on: 192.168.0.149

  • The PlexConnect version number. If using Github source then a time and date of download (look at the creation date of the folder) and if you are using any testing branch e.g. the Elan/PlexInc one. 23/07/2013 13:19u

  • Detail on the media file if it is an issue related to playing a media file (in order to get the necessary information on a particular media file go into the Plex web interface, select the video file, when it brings up the page for the media file click on the "i" information button on the left hand side, it will then bring up a "media info" box, click on the "View XML" button, it will then open a browser window with the relevant information, copy this to http://www.pastebin.com and use the pastebin link to post the details; posting the information directly in the forum may mess up the formatting and generally takes up a lot of space): Applies to all media files. mainly 720p MKV files

  • detailed description of the issue (the clearer you can make this the better): I've been struggling here for the past few days. I'm trying to get Plex working on my ATV but keep running into an error when playing the movie's. "An error has occured while loading this content" (translated from dutch)

I've installed PMS on my Qnap TS421 (unofficial ARM package) and have plexconnect running on a Windows8 pro desktop.
I tried to install the Plex media center on another Win8 laptop and everything worked great on there. Moves playback without a hitch. So I don't think anything is wrong with the PMS.

  • Ensure you post your 'PlexConnect.log' file to pastebin and post the link ('PlexConnect.log' is located in your PlexConnect folder). If possible, follow these steps to create a "more detailed fresh" one: http://pastebin.com/b3nAG8By

Thank you for taking a look at my issue at hand.

I don’t know if this the problem but you have a typo in the enable plexgdm setting. It says “fals” rather than “false”

PlexGDM is running, which is actually a good thing: PMS is running on .149 whereas the Settings file states .165. I would recommed to set "enable_plexgdm" to "True" - with capital T.

NAS... is it able to transcode or at least do the "direct streaming" while changing the media container? Keep in mind that aTV is somewhat limited with Container/Codec support.

Hi,

I changed the settings to .149 and True for GDM. Restarted everything but to no avail :( The nas a simple arm proc. so I don't know about transcoding possibilities. How can I force direct play with mkv files?

Frank

You can't... aTV won't be able to replay MKV.

Depending on the codecs used, you might be able to simply remux those files to mp4 (h264, aac).

But the question is still valid - is your NAS (or the PMS on your NAS) capable of doing the remuxing on the fly?

I have no idea. How can I find out? Should I install PMs on something else?

PMS on your Win machine should work...

as for the NAS software, is there a description available on the features?

Looks like a no go: the wiki says arm does not transcode... http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/FAQ:_Plex_Media_Server_and_NAS#I_think_I.27ll_be_ok_with_an_ARM_based_NAS.2C_but_just_in_case.2C_what_does_not_having_the_ability_to_transcode_really_mean.3F
