Media Library folder and subfolder confusion

Hi,
I am new to Plex and have it on a Qnap NAS. It seems to be working fine however I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind. I use it so far only for our own videos we take.

I have a folder on the NAS named VIDEO-NEW and under it lots of subfolders each named for a particular event with their own MP4’s etc.

In Plex I have added a Category LIVE SHOWS and in this Library I see in the address
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/CodexPack/share/VIDEO-NEW

When I Browser for the folder I see the /mnt/boot_config folder with the CACHEDEV1-DATA name.

When I click this I see my NAS folders including the VIDEO-NEW.

A question is if I choose this folder, does this mean ALL the subfolders under it are chosen too, or do I have to add each subfolder individually ?

If I want to create another Plex Library with only SOME of the subfolders in the VIDEO-NEW folders, how do I do this?

So far love it, but have to get my head around it.

Thanks

oz

There are a few quirks with QNAP.

  1. CodexPack is QNAP proprietary and doesn’t work well with anything except QNAP’s software.

  2. Any dotnamed folder will be deleted by QTS when the corresponding software is removed. dot folders are Linux’s “hidden” folders and shouldn’t be used by users.

  3. Use the real shared folder names when you’re working with Plex, e.g.
    – /share/Movies
    – /share/TV
    – /share/Music
    – /share/HomeMovies
    – /share/Photos

  4. Plex allows you to add multiple folders to a library section, For example. Let’s say you curate your media by age. You might have a TV shared folder, sub subfolders for each decade, and then your shows under each appropriately.

  • /share/TV/1980s
  • /share/TV/1990s
  • /share/TV/2000s
  • /share/TV/2010s
  • /share/TV/2020s
  1. Now, let’s suppose, you want to create one TV library section.
All you need to do is create one TV library section and add each of these 5 top level folders to the TV Library section definition (“Add Folders” tab)
( Here, I group mine differently but this shows how to add multiple locations … on a different server platform )

  2. If you push the grouping down , you run the risk of things being misidentified.
The structure to use is : <top_level_directory>/SeriesName/Season xx/......

There’s a lot to learn but it’s easy if you play with it.

Here’s the QNAP FAQ.

Of importance to your question, I recommend looking at:

Q14: Where should I put my medias?

I’m sure you’ll have more questions so don’t hesitate. There’s always someone around to help (users or staff)

Many thanks will try and follow your advice.

So am I correct I should not use the current /share/CACHEDEV as above but create a new primary folder say, /share/LIVE_SHOWS , then under it, create a folder for each show.

/share/LIVE_SHOWS
/share/LIVE_SHOWS/Thistown
/share/LIVE_SHOWS/Thattown
/share/LIVE_SHOWS/etc

Or does everything I create come under the CACHEDEV

/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/LIVE_SHOWS
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/LIVE_SHOWS/Thistown
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/LIVE_SHOWS/Thattown
/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/LIVE_SHOWS/etc

Am I on the right track… sorry :frowning:

sub folder VIDEO-NEW
current folder paths
add folder
