Media metadata mis-matching on PBS Nova Series

I have PBS Nova shows set to record on my Plex DVR. I’ve noticed that they often (but not always) get the wrong information. It’ll record SxxExx and show up as some other show. The most recent was S44E15 “Secrets of the Forbidden City”, but Plex showed up as “Building Chernobyl’s MegaTomb” which was really S44E08. I’m unsure why this isn’t showing up correctly or what I can do to fix it.

Additionally, there are sometimes some shows that instead of being stored as “NOVA (1974) - SxxExx - Title.ts” will get stored as “NOVA (1974) - 2022-09-26 03 00 00 - NOVA.ts”, replacing the date / time with the date / time the show aired. This is not all shows, but some, so I’m not sure why. Perhaps my local PBS has issues? Somehow it knows they were NOVA, just not what season or episode.

TMDB and TVDB list the show differently. This can cause problems with how episodes are displayed in Plex.

TMDB: NOVA: Season 44 (2016) — The Movie Database (TMDB)
Episode 08: Secrets of the Sky Tombs
Episode 15: Building Chernobyl’s Megatomb
Episode 22: Secrets of the Forbidden City

TVDB: https://thetvdb.com/series/nova/seasons/official/44
Episode 08: Building Chernobyl’s MegaTomb
Episode 15: Secrets of the Forbidden City
Episode 22: N/A. TVDB lists only 21 episodes for season 44

You can choose which source to use at either the library or show level.

Library Level

  1. Edit the library
  2. Choose Advanced
  3. Scroll down to Episode Ordering.
  4. Choose either TheTVDB or The Movie Database.
  5. Save Changes.
  6. Refresh metadata for the library if Plex does not do so automatically.

Show Level

  1. Edit the Show (Pencil icon, show level, not season or episode levels)
  2. Choose Advanced
  3. Scroll down to Episode Ordering
  4. Choose desired ordering
  5. Save Changes
  6. Refresh metadata for the show (or library) if Plex does not do so automatically.

WOW - I didn’t realize I could do that on a show level. I was worried about making changes to Agents since it may effect other shows. But - This seems great. Curious as to why they are different tho. Thanks!
