I’m running Plex Media Server on a Mac desktop. It has been running perfectly until today. As far as I know, nothing has changed in my system or network.
But today when I tried to scan my libraries to add new media files, nothing happened.
I also tried to add a NEW Library, but the “Add Library” button is missing.
And my server in the left hand menu shows that it’s locked, and when I click on it, it says the server is “nearby”… but it’s not nearby. I’m actually ON the server.
Finally, Remote Access keeps stopping. I can start it up, and 10 seconds later it stops again.
I can still view the various Settings menu items, and I can still play media on my other devices on my local network.
Besides the server, I have only ever run Plex on a few devices: my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro, as well as my Nvidia Shield. But the server has only ever been run on one system.
the green lock only means there is an encrypted connection. “nearby” means it is on the local network, if you are on the same computer then it is on the local network
Looking at your screens shot of the libraries it looks like something is wrong with the page loading as the “19 libraries” would be lined up with that dark grey line. If you don’t have any browser extensions and such running then I would also suggest trying a different browser as a first step
Thanks to both of you. Chrome solved the Libraries and the scanning issues. Weird that Safari suddenly stopped working, though.
And thanks for the explanation about the green lock and “nearby”.
Any ideas on why my remote access fails? I can post additional screen grabs of the remote access details screen (I’ll mask the actual IP addresses), if it might help.
Suggest you use manual port forwarding instead of automatic configuration. It takes additional work to set up, but is more reliable.
Also, disable any VPN software running on your Plex server or your Internet router. Plex does not always play nice with VPNs. The VPN needs to be down before the Plex Media Server software starts, so it does not interfere with Plex obtaining a public IP address.
