What setting did you have to change?
The Xfinity X1 router allows you to log into it. When in there, to under Firewall, then IPv4, then switch to custom security. Under those custom settings, I checked all the boxes to block everything. Don’t check the last box as that one disables the firewall entirely.
“Block everything” is pretty vague lol.
It’s super common for aggressive firewalls to prevent local servers from working. Or block DNS resolution (DNS rebinding protection) for local addresses. Or to segment WiFi and wired. Or just to break stuff. ![]()
Well, if you have one of these routers from Xfinity, there’s only 5 boxes under custom security that you can enable or disable. It’s not like you’re at the CLI of a Cisco router. Very limited options. So its not that difficult to disable everything (meaning, check the 5 boxes to block http, https, icmp, multicast, peer-to-peer apps, and IDENT). The 6th box disables the firewall entirely.
Joining this thread as I’m having the same problem!
Is there any solution to this yet? It’s actually the worst the update allows these sort of issues with no resolution?
Please tell me there’s a way to fix this remote access issue
Is there any solution Bhav?

Shouldn’t need a computing degree to fix this. I have a Cox gigablast router and of course the username and password don’t work to get into it to try and fumble through these directions that might as well be written in greek ![]()
Same here
Hi joining in, same problem.
I have a weird issue with my LG TV, it won’t connect to server on app, say Server Unavailable. Then I go to my Android phone, open Plex, it to says Server Unavailable. Then a moment later, it connects. I can browse my files, when I go back to my LG TV, the Plex app works fine.
In addition to this, I have enabled Remote Access. I can connect to Plex server on another PC on my Network, however when I try to access the server from a remote PC it says Server Unavailable.
I too have tried the Port forwarding rule, enabling it for TCP and UDP. I believe my router supports UnPnp - its a BT router. I have given Plex a static and DHCP address.
Mostly the Remote Access says my server is available outside my network but if I wait a while it changes to not available and the internet icon gets greyed out. and at no point can I seem to access remotely.
I can access remotely with my Android phone - I do not have to be on my Network to access Plex server on my phone.
I bought the one time subscription to allow streaming to my phone as I thought that might help.
I do not have Plex pass.
Here’s my link to the TV app prob that requires me to use my Android app to wake up the Plex server to allow my LG TV to connect.
Link - Accessing server with TV app
I guess its a router thing.
Does anyone think buying a proper router rather than the stock ISP provided one might solve it?
Could it be something to do with ISP addressing and it not being Static?
I’ve read some ISP’s do weird things with your address.
Perhaps we could draw a list up of ISP’s known to work?
Maybe routers too?
When I try to connect remotely I get ‘app.plex.tv is unable to connect to kitchen-pc securely’
I have tried changing the allow unsecure connections before. But I can’t say that I have, enabled disabled remote, enabled insecure connections, then gone outside my network and failed to connect before Plex itself reports its unavailable in the Remote Access part of settings. (I’m not at home to check at that point) When I get home, sometimes Plex says it is available, sometimes it says it isn’t.
Immediately after trying to access remotely I open the Plex app on my phone and it works perfectly. Thats even when using my work staff WiFi.
Great app, if I could just get remote access from another PC not on my network working it would be absolutely perfect.
And now it is perfect!
My problems solved and I may or may not have had a problem in the first place.
I checked my BT router config and found that the DHCP address rand was specified as 192.168.1.64-192.168.1.253
I had been using a Static IP ending in either .125 or .105 etc
So I set the static IP of my Plex server to below 192.168.1.64
I factory reset my router and restarted my PC
I re-applied the Port Forward rule for the new static IP address. The router wanted External and Internal port range - 4 entries, I just put 32400 in all fields, set rule to TCP/UDP and saved.
At work I tried my Android, worked ok, tried my work PC still not working, tried a laptop connected to work staff wi-fi and Plex works fine in a browser.
So I can connect remotely via a web browser, it seems my work network policy interferes with connecting on a work PC but on a laptop over work network its fine.
I will check when I get home what the Remote Access settings page shows and see if it still thinks its available because I was getting the Plex server itself reporting it wasn’t available even though it was enabled, hence I disabled, re-enabled and it was fine for a while but I still couldn’t connect on work PC and then it would report not available.
Now I know work policy was preventing me from connecting but doesn’t apply on laptop or personal device connected to network and I believe assigning a static IP address within the DHCP address range was making it worse.
Share a screenshot of the router port forwarding config?
Typically any “source port” should be left blank.

Initially on the ‘External Ports’ I put 20000 for both boxes because when I googled what to enter the advice was use anything between 20000 and 50000, so I used 20000 ![]()
I can also report that Plex sever is still reporting its contactable to the outside world, where before it lost connection and thought it couldn’t see internet.
Your config looks good!
(You only need TCP)
First, thank you FordGuy61. Don’t know if this will work for everyone, but thus far it is working for me and I feel like such an idiot because it’s troubleshooting 101.
It was suggested to unplug/shutdown my entire network. I disconnected everything (Router, relay, Alexas, Etc) and started everything up from the wall forward. Router first, then devices hardwired to router, then the the Wi-Fi devices, relay and then alexas and so forth.
Everything is working properly so far, will post if anything changes. I hope this helps some if not all. And a huge thanks again to FordGuy61!!!
+1
Same problem as many here above.
Running Plex on Synology NAS.
Plex gives me the friendly message in green that all is fine for remote access, every time I activate it. Then, after anything between 1 and 10 minutes it turns back into inaccessible from the outside.
Made my modem+router combo into 1 node, forwarded 32400 ports, ensured UPNP is active.
Nothing helped.
1 more thing to mention maybe: according to the status provided by Plex in the remote access section, the broken piece is between my public address and the internet. The link between private and public remains up.
Hope to hear about a fix from the Plex team soon !
vs.
I wonder what solution you expect from Plex if the issue is supposed to be between your router and the internet?
Thank you for your answer tom80H
Now that the point is made that you understand the problem and I don’t, maybe we could move into looking for the solution? Or maybe I misunderstood the purpose of forums in the first place.
Fact is that the remote access does not work for me -and many others here above- despite following all the good advice and troubleshooting suggestions published on the Plex site.
Any idea what it could be ?
You’ll need to provide some more details to get a solid idea.
Remote access involves a lot of parties from your ISP who could be blocking certain communication / ports or lock you in a CGNAT… to a bad router configuration (especially if there’s multiple components involved through which traffic needs to hop in order to “get out”)… down to (last not least) the server itself (potential hiccups with the OS or Plex configuration).
It’s usually a good starting point to go through the basic troubleshooting:
also having this issue. plex was working fine on my synology just a few days ago, i disabled that server and moved all of the content to a dedicated gaming pc with a new install of windows, and now continue to get “not available outside of your network”. when i hit retry it will say accessible for less than 30s, then back to innaccessible. i have tried port forwarding, dmz, vpn, and everything else i can think of.
nothing equipment wise has changed in the network, and the pc it is running was previously as dedicated gaming pc. i built a new pc and did a fresh install of windows on the previous rig.
plex version 1.27.2.5929
happy to send any additional data.
See the troubleshooting link above. Those checks should give you a first look at what’s causing your problem.
