Meta Data for personal videos

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: N/A

Hi

I am after some advice as a lot of what i have found in the forums is old and there have been a lot of changes to plex, especially third party plugins.

I have a library called Home Videos (setup as TV Programs) and have personal videos in it. Each corresponding mp4 video file has a NFO file with the metadata for the particular video.

How can I get Plex to read the NFO so as to populate the contents correctly and display it within the UI?

Any help on this is very very gratefully received.

Thanks in advance!

There are a couple of plugins that read NFO files and add that information to the Plex Database.
I use for movies; XBMCnfoMoviesImporter
for TV series; XBMCnfoTVImporter

I have these setup so Plex uses only these to get the data.

Now there is a lot of information about plugins/channels going away…
I think that the terms plugin and channels were used interchangeably and create some confusion. I’m hopeful that Plex means to stop support for the channel type plugins but keep the system plugins.

The NFO files need to be setup correctly to be read by these plugins,
You said you have the Home Videos setup as TV library… You may want to check and see the file formats that the different libraries require.

I’d put as much meta data as possible directly into the mp4 files. Because Plex can read the most important ones already from there.

Cheers!

@nydave69 thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I got this working after your suggestion! Amazing!!

Thanks very much!

That only works if all your video files are mp4…

Yes, luckily all my media is… happy days!

I use Subler on my Mac for writing metadata to my MP4 files, and it’s amazing. Highly recommend to anyone with access to a mac, or a macOS VM.
