Meta Data for TV Shows not downloading with My Passport Wireless Pro

I think this discussion deserves its own thread. I’ve read that Plex has had some issues with meta data not updating correctly. This particular thread is a good reference: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/225873/problem-to-retrieving-metadata-from-tvdb/p1

I’m using the new My Passport Wireless Pro and I essentially had to throw in the towel and delete my TV Show library. For the short term, I’ve given up on including any TV Shows.

Before throwing in the towel, I’ve tried everything including multiple rebuilds but I can NEVER get all of the meta data to update on the Plex server running on this device. I believe there is a serious problem that needs to be resolved. Whatever the underlying problem, the MPWP becomes very unstable and often locks up forcing the user to hard power down leading to potential drive damage. With my TV library deleted, and database optimized, the performance is remarkably better.

@taz1349@gmail.com - Can you tell us what TV Shows are not being processed correctly?
Also, when is it locking up? When playing? When trying to download metadata?

As mentioned in that other thread. This is a know issue with PMS in general not just the WD PWP. The fix will be included in the next general PMS update which should also make it to the WD PWP.

One of the issues was PMS doing too much work getting the information. This issue is more prevalent with low memory devices like the WD PWP. You should see an improvement in overall metadata gathering with the update.

Sounds like a much sought after and needed fix @MovieFan. I hope this is forthcoming in the near future. No question that WD PWP is getting completely overwhelmed trying to pull down the TV metadata which leads to system hangs, lockups, etc. Since I’ve deleted the TV library, things are much better.

@RSAVA - The locking up on the WD PWP happens when just pulling down the metadata for TV Shows. This device simply can’t handle the overhead that is being caused.

Yes, some have found that happens when they dump a lot of video/music all at once. But then it is fairly small processor (Arm7) with minimum memory (I think just 1/2 GB).
I have never dropped in more than 5 movies/2 seasons at a time and gave it about an hour to process, then repeated.
Regardless of how it was marketed (that is marketing) it is still just a portable media server, not really meant to be a main PMS. At least that is what i got out of the blog post that introduced it.
Hopefully the fix that @MovieFan.Plex mentions will fix it for those having issues.
Cheers!

@rsava - Here’s the thing, I’ve had ZERO problems with movies despite having a large number. Having spent hours with the product I can tell you that there’s something else at play as @MovieFan has suggested. Once that problem is resolved, I don’t think we’ll be seeing these types of issues. It may take a long time for the WD PWP to pull down all the meta data and that’s not a problem. The current issue is causing the WD PWP to literally lock up and die and it’s only happening with TV Shows.

@MovieFan.Plex There’s something else going on here possibly. Following up on @rsava suggestion, I tried adding just one TV series to a TV Show library on the WD PWP and it recognized the series and all of the episodes and downloaded all of the meta data without issue. Then I added two more series to the same directory that my TV Show Library points to and the Plex Server on the WD PWP acts as if they don’t exist. If I look by folder, I can see the two additional folders in the Plex interface but the library scanner doesn’t seem to recognize the additional folders in the TV library. This seems to be a different problem which is exasperating the TV meta data download problem.

As a potential hint, when I choose “by folder” and then click into each of the folders, although they have a different number of files each, the pictures and names shown are all from the first TV series successfully downloaded. It’s like the server is confused and applying the same meta data to the other folders? Worse, if I try to play a file from one of the other TV series folders, the video that is played is from the first TV series.

So, I decided once again to delete the TV Show library. I optimized the database, and I added back the folder again and now it at least sees all three sub-folders. I’ll let it attempt to download the meta data again, add another show folder (one at a time) and see if this thing will recognize the additional folders or not.

Do you think the fixes you’ve been working on that are affecting TV shows not working on the WD PWP will fix these types of issues too? Are they all related?

Can you provide exact examples of your file naming structure (full paths) and filenames?

I’ll get that to you @MovieFan.Plex. In the immediate, I can tell you that I used the path as created by Plex for optimization wherein you have a nested sub-directory structure something like Plex/Original/TV Show Directory/Individual Media Files. Whatever the default is that Plex creates. Over the weekend, I added a new TV show library and pointed it to the directory right above the original TV Show Directories. I’m adding shows one at a time and so far success. I’ve got 4 shows fully indexed with meta data and I’ll be adding others. I’m wondering if the multiple nested sub-menus are playing a role?

The Media Optimize (MO) feature in Plex was not specifically designed for this so even though the naming might be right for what MO needs, it may not be correct when used a an independent library.

Nested folders do not work well for TV Shows. If they are similarly named shows, and you are adding them at the same time things can get even worse.
