Metadata failure

Version 1.22.3.4523

I am having an occasional problem where shows do not update with content that is available on thetvdb.com. I will provide an example below:

Dateline (AU) Dateline (AU) - TheTVDB.com

The two most recent episodes have available descriptions on thetvdb as follows:

However on Plex they list like this:

I have tried refreshing metadata on individual episodes and on the show itself. No change occurs.

I have tried rematching the show using the show id from thetvdb (181341) - in this case for some reason the show refuses to be found:

This is when using the new Plex TV Series search function.

This seems odd to me because on the main show page in Plex, it appears to be sourcing info/metadata from thetvdb.com.

If I downgrade the whole library matching to “TheTVDB” agent, I can now get it to find the show on thetvdb by it’s reference number. Metadata then updates somewhat. but not properly:

Is this a bug? Or is there something I can do to resolve the issue?

I don’t know if what you’re experiencing is a bug, but I have certain shows that just refuse to match no matter what I do.

If you have any episodes of NOVA or 20/20 U.S. forget it.

NOVA matches with random episodes in multiple different seasons and 20/20 matches with episodes in season 44.

The only problem with that is 20/20 only has 43 seasons so far

I tried every naming convention Plex suggests and I haven’t found a solution. I know I have to gather the info for those shows and input things manually now. There might be a better solution but I’m done messing with it

If you just upgraded the matching it might be a bug. That scanner is new and I’m sure it has some bugs for specific things like this.

Hopefully an employee sees this and reports it for you or can give you another solution

Yeah, I have had problems like you’ve described as well. Like you, I know I’m following naming standards. It seems very random when things fail but I feel like there should be something we can pinpoint. One trend I’m seeing here is that we’re both talking about documentary/news style shows. It would be weird if the “bug” was specific to that, but who knows.

We’ve been seeing a few instances where the TVDB api isn’t returning updates as expected which leads to some episodes taking much longer than usual to reflect on our end. I think this is one of those cases as episode 8 was updated 6 days ago on TVDB but never reflected on our end. We’re in contact with TVDB about this and hopefully will be able to resolve it soon.

As for episode 9, that one was only updated 10 hours ago and well within the expected delay for changes.

If you have the Refresh library metadata periodically scheduled job enabled then these episodes will all just update automatically during the scheduled tasks window. There is nothing to do here except wait.

Also, when searching using IDs on the Plex TV Series agent you need to include the prefix for the source, in this case you would need to search tvdb-181341 in the title field.

Ok, so am I correct that what you are saying is it takes a while for any updates on tvdb to arrive in Plex agent metadata updates?

I’m not complaining, but in that case I’m not sure yet what the incentive is for me to upgrade matching to Plex agent, as it usually comes straight through if updated on tvdb (if using tvdb as the agent).

Just a point of detail, for what it’s worth - the metadata on episode 8 did not come through properly (episode name did not update).

Thanks for the tip on the prefix for searching by ID, I’m sure that will come in very handy.

It all depends on how long the information has been available at the source, normally basic things like titles and summaries are available far enough in advance before airing.

You’ll notice a delay on both agents when it comes to things that have been changed very recently (as you see with your example for Episode 9 of Dateline).
