New to forum, but have similar issue. PLEX media server on NAS. Current server version. File nomenclature as suggested in PLEX guides and works as expected EXCEPT:
Battlestar Galactica (2003) has several “movies” as part of the series. All are recognized OK, with the exception of “Razor”, which originally aired as two episodes, but appears on the Blu ray as a single file “broadcast version” and a longer “unrated extended version”; Both versions can be streamed online. Under “Specials” in the Battlestar Galactica (2003) TVDB, the original 2 episodes are designated s00e04 and s00e05 and by naming single file either s00e04 or s00e05 or s00e04-e05, I can associate metadata with the PLEX listing. However, there is also a TVDB identifier for the complete movie (broadcast version, I think): TheTVDB Movie #134906 (at Battlestar Galactica: Razor - TheTVDB.com). But when I use {tvdb-134906} in the file name instead of the series/episode number, PLEX does not recognize it.
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have toyed with moving the “movies” to my movie library, but would prefer to keep the entire series together, if I can. Most of the Specials aired as a single long episode (movie), so they are OK. The problem with Razor is that it aired as 2 episodes and is listed as two parts in the TVBD.
At the moment, I just included s00e04 in the file name and edited the metadata General display to just say “Razor” and then merged the descriptions of the 2 episodes. It’s a work-around and the listing still says Razor Episode 4, but it may have to do.
Try renaming it to s00e04-e05. That should work and pull both episodes metadata and don’t use the movie identifier tvdb-134906.
Once it’s matched against the show level you don’t have need to add additional matches on the episodes. The correct naming of sxxexx will pick them up.
If you use s00e04-e05, you get two separate listings in the library, each of which references the original single file. These two listings cannot be merged (apparently only movies can be merged, and not tv episodes), but that would have been a potential solution.
By using either s00e04 OR s00e05, you get a single listing that references and plays the single movie file, but which is labeled as if it were referring to only the first or second episode. This work-around does play the entire movie, but the labeling is incorrect and misleading.
No. I have one file. I have a copy of the single Razor movie file from the Blu ray. The Razor movie was originally broadcast as 2 episodes on TV, and so The TVDB lists the two episodes under Battlestar Galactica Specials as s00e04 and s00e05. There is no listing for the combined episodes that were combined on the Blu ray into a single movie file.
To make it worse, there are two versions of the single complete movie file. One is simply a combined version of the two broadcast episodes, and the other is a longer (extended) version. The page I referenced on The TVDB site is different from the Specials page and lists Razor as TVDB Movie #134906, but PLEX refuses to recognize that ID.
I get you now. There is no way in plex to combine the metadata from two episode entries from tvdb into one entry. I see these options for you …
Name the file s00e04 and you’ll just get the metadata from that episode entry.
Name the file s00e04-e05 and you’ll just get the metadata from the two episode entries.
Name the file s00e04 and manually edit the metadata in plex to be what you want. This will lock the fields so it won’t get overwritten upon a metadata refresh.
Move the file from your tv library into the movie library like I done.
Don’t really see any other alternatives for you.
Now the extended version vrs original, that’s even more complicated as plex does not distinguish between them. I do remember posting in a thread before on that topic with a potential workaround, let me see if I can find it.
I have already done #3 (see above). That works, but is not pretty.
The reason I posted was because if there is a TVDB ID# for the combined movie file, and I give PLEX that number in the file name, it should be able to look it up. Since it can’t, that may be an error in PLEX or the TVDB.
I just did a fix match on my test server on a movie and tv library using the TVDB ID 134906.
If you do a fix match and clear out the title and years fields and search on tvdb-134906 in a movie library (for the new Plex Agent/Scanner) it will find a result. If you try the same thing for a TV series there are no results, which makes sense as when you go to the page on TheTVDB for that ID, it states “TheTVDB.com Movie ID” whereas a series says “TheTVDB.com Series ID”, so the Plex Agent wouldn’t find it for a series.
So, after all this, and some editing of the metadata of the General metadata, I named the file in the library s00e04 (for which PLEX finds metadata), then edited the name from “Razor (1)” to “Razor” and added in the Summary from episode 2. The result now appears the same as the other single file “movies” and links to the single file movie in the library… Saved me from having to divide the series between my Movie and TV Show libraries.
