Metadata Sync Lost after Synology DSM 7.0 update

Server Version#:DSM 7.0.1-42218
Player Version#: 4.76.1

I made the mistake of upgrading my NAS :(!

Thought I lost everything but my media files were still there. I had everything working except my metadata yesterday so i tried re installing and the Plex folder no longer had the data in it so… I have to rebuild. Totally stinks!

So I have ingested all of the media again but I cannot get the metadata to pull down anything… no artwork… no trailers… no cast… nothing. When I try fix match it very quickly returns “no matches found”. It is so quick it doesn’t even feel like it is searching. I’ve tried switching to Legacy in Settings / Agents but that didn’t work.

I have been searching for hours… I know how to name the files ect… that’s usually what my search comes up with. It worked perfectly on the old version.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Did you delete the Plex shared folder?

If you haven’t AND it contains Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.

Everything can be saved.

I did not… however after the migration it seems to have only one file (It’s a text document called “Migration”) nothing else is in the Plex shared Folder.

I wish it wasn’t so.

Don’t panic.

It should be Migration.log

That said, ALL of your server’s metadata is now in the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

DSM 7 forced a complete rewrite and restructure of everything.

Plex share → PlexMediaServer share – for metadata only (NO MEDIA)
Plex user → PlexMediaServer service

I would first like you to look at this. If I have surmised correctly, all you now need to do is grant permission for “PlexMediaServer” to see your media.

Here’s the How-To.

Thanks so much…

So all permission boxes are checked on both Plex and PlexMediaServer.

I think that is where I was yesterday… All was working except for the metadata sync. Soo… I foolishly deleted the install thinking the backup data was still on Plex… and it wasn’t. I just tried again to set permissions for PlexMediaServer and then did a sync… no luck. My fault.

I’m already a quarter of the way in rebuilding my collections. Right now… If I can get the metadata to sync… I think this is the easiest route. Unless there is something I am overlooking.

  1. First, When you uninstall the package, UNLESS you tell it to delete everything, only the software is removed. ALL your data is kept intact.

  2. Which option did you use when you uninstalled the package ?

  3. When you set permissions for PlexMediaServer, did you apply to “This folder, sub-folders and files” at the top of the shared folder ?

  4. If you go into the PlexMediaServer shared folder, do you see AppData?
Underneath that do you see “Plex Media Server” ?

  1. I manually deleted the folder thinking it was the right thing to do. I kept the Plex folder… but deleted PlexMediaServer.
  2. I installed the second option
  3. Yes sir… sub folders too.
  4. There is a PlexMediaServer folder inside the App Data folder.

Thanks so much! I appreciate your help here!

  1. The Plex shared folder is empty , with exception of “Migration.log” ?
  2. This might take some time – please let it –
  • Right-Click on the AppData folder → Properties.
  1. Let it count the number of folders and files then report the total amount of space used.
  1. yes sir
  2. will do… I have allready synced my media and am mostly through organizing my collections. should I stop doing this?
  3. 1.17GB / 22,417 files / 79573 folders

Thanks

Excellent.

Please now look in your Downloads folder and tell me which Plex Media Server SPK (Synology PacKage) file you have ?

PlexMediaServer-1.26.0.5715-8cf78dab3-x86_64_DSM7

Excellent…

I am writing this based on you having 1.26.0.5715 in hand

-and-

Plex having been uninstalled

  • We can install the package
  • Have it attach to your account.
  • You can then open it and confirm all the settings are to your liking again.

Here we go.

  1. Open Package Center

  2. Manual Install

  3. Select your 1.26.0 SPK file

  4. Upload it and let the installer start

  5. At the menu choices:

  • Install using the “Plex Claim Token” method.
  1. Click “Get Plex Claim Token” link.

  2. Your browser will open and present you a link.

  3. COPY that link into your browser

  4. Return to the installer

  5. PASTE that back into the installer window

  6. Let it install.

  7. It will take a little longer than normal because the Installer will take the token, tallk to Plex.tv for you, and then add your credentials to the PMS server again.

  8. If all is successful, You’ll see the blue banner stating so. You’ll also see text that tells you the server was successfully claimed (showing your Plex Username)

  9. Now, this is important.

  • Open a new incognito window
  • Open the Synology by it’s LAN IP & port number (http://IP.Addr.of.Syno:32400/web)
  • It will greet you
  • It will want you to sign in (do it)
  • You’ll arrive at the dashboard
  • ALL your library sections should still be there waiting for you.
  1. Now you can start looking around at your “Settings - Server” to make sure each category is where you had it; adjusting as required.

Good deal… I’m going to copy the current PlexMediaServer file to a scratch drive first just in case it fails… I can at least get back to where I am now.

I’ll report back in a bit.

Well, It did not bring me back to where it was before the upgrade… but it did fix the metadata problem. I can now run a match and repopulate everything. This works for me as I am mostly done reorganizing. Thank you so much for taking the time to help! This worked well!

I’m sorry you didn’t get all of it.

The installer takes everything from the “Plex” share and, after a bit of processing for DSM 7, moves it over into the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.

With all your permissions set, it should be able to pull back all the metadata (it should still be sitting there waiting to be reattached in the bundles)

Yes sir… all that’s left is the fine tuning.

Thanks so much!
