Migrated Server, now can only run one at a time

Hi

I have a Plex server that has all my movies, tv and music on. As I was running low on space, I decided to build another server purely for music, thus providing capacity to grow in both music and tv/movies. I followed the ‘move an install to another system’ to ensure I kept all of my metadata for my music which has taken me a long time to generate. The idea being I would just remove the movies and tv libraries from the music server once it was all up and running. Everything is working great in terms of metadata and accessing files. The issue is that I can now only access one server at a time and it seems to keep reverting to the original server name for the new server, once the old server comes online. In the past when I had two different servers they could each be selected from the client. I suspect somewhere in the duplicate plex server code, it must be referencing the old server somewhere but I am now at a loss. I have signed in and out of both several times, I have claimed/unclaimed the new server several times also. I have also restarted the server.

Essentially, it works fine, until I bring the original server online, then all reference to the new one seems to just disappear, only being accessible via the ip address in the browser, at which point the friendly name has changed to that of the original server. Also, when I check servers in devices, there is only ever 1. Sometimes it has the name of the old server, sometimes it has the name of the new server. Please help, I’m sure this must be something simple.

Both servers are running on Unraid 6, the original is on 6.2.1 and the new server is on 6.5. On both servers I am using the Plex Docker from Limetech.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

give the 2nd server a different name… that should do the job.
however… have you considered simply giving the original server more storage / disk space?

You need to edit the advanced server config of the ‘clone’

Hi

Thanks for the fast reply. They have different names already. As I said, the new server seems to revert to the old server name whenever the old server is brought online. Any other ideas?

Ideally that’s what I would have done but due to access to drives sitting idle and lack of funds at the moment to invest in larger drives, I went this route as I already had the server.

This is not about the name.

Thanks OttoKerner, I just did that. The result seemed to be my original server becoming unclaimed (I definitely did it on the right server). Will those deleted values in the new server repopulate (with new values) with a restart? I still can’t seem to get them up and running. Is there anything else I need to do?

@OttoKerner

Ok, one thing I’ve just noticed is that since doing that, the 3 machine identifiers you suggested I remove have now been populated with unique information in the preferences.xml file on the new server. The plex token however has not though so is not present at all now. Does that shed any light?

Thanks

Ben

That is expected.
But of course on the server where you deleted those config values.

Will those deleted values in the new server repopulate (with new values) with a restart?

Yes, that is the aim. So your cloned server gets a different machine ID, which is how different servers are distinguished by, not their name.

I still can’t seem to get them up and running. Is there anything else I need to do?

Restart both servers, after you claimed the unclaimed one.

The X-Plex Token is your account, not your server. Since both servers are signed into the same account, this is expected.

@OttoKerner after a few more restarts/claimings it seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks a lot!

Your web browser might be doing some caching of values. So it is better to reload the ‘web page’ after performing the above procedures.
