Migrating DSM 6 to 7 without prior notice of advised steps --> no migration happened

30 minutes and still the maintenance message. No need to worry or do you think something went wrong?
I’d be happy to wait a while if this is normal, so just checking.

I am a bit concerned.

Using FileStation, make a ZIP of the “Logs” directory and attach it please.

Download then attach the ZIP here.

I see there is an error message in the log, so probably that is at fault.
Logs.zip (6.2 KB)
Maybe you can figure it out?
My basic knowledge is telling me that Plex (with user Plexmediaserver) tries to get access to “/volume1/Downloads/Recordings/.grab”. But access is denied because Plexmediaserver does not have permission to access this.

  1. I did not know this folder was accessed by Plex, so I had not yet gave it permission. Have done it now, but what to do? Wait or restart Plex?
  2. The file it is trying to access is not in the Downloads folder. There is no subfolder ‘Recordings’. What to do?

OK, I see what’s happening

  1. Shared folder “Downloads” doesn’t grant R/W to PlexMediaServer. Apparently you have this in use as a DVR folder.

  2. “401” is permission denied. The server can’t log in. We can and will now fix this.

  • Uninstall the package – UNINSTALL ONLY (Keep) option
  • Reinstall same package again HOWEVER -
    – New or lost servers option (Plex Claim Token mode)
    – Click hyperlink to get the claim token
    – Browser window opens
    – COPY the claim token
    – Return to installation window
    – PASTE claim token into the box on the form
    – Click NEXT NEXT DONE and allow it to install and claim.

This takes a bit more time than normal install (getting new credentials)

When complete, it will confirm your Plex Username and Email address

When you have opportunity, enable DEBUG server logging again

Now we are talking
This seems to have done the trick, my old libraries are back again (with all metadata and subs).

You ask me to enable the Debug server logging, I would happily do this. But what do you want me to do with it and for how long should it be enabled?

There’s no harm in leaving DEBUG enabled but the choice is always yours.

I like when presented with DEBUG logging because INFO/WARN/ERROR logs don’t help me figure out what the problem is.

In this case, I spotted the ‘401’ error and knew what the problem was.

In many cases, especially HW transcoding, I need DEBUG logging to see what is happening BEFORE the transcode begins.

I have done al little bit of testing if everything is working again, and this seems to be the case.
And to put it short; You are an ABSOLUTE HERO!

I was working on this from this morning (8.30am) and it is now almost 9.00pm here.
So 12 hours of complaining and cursing myself for being the careless when doing a big upgrade like the one from DSM 6 to 7.
Normally I am very cautious and try and figure out all the ‘bits and buts’, and I forget this 1 time and look what happens.
Thankfully you were there to save the day (and my holiday mood).
