Migrating Plex database from old nas to new nas

Hey,
How easy is it to transfer all the data including Plex from an old NAS to a new one? I’ll have new hard drives in the new NAS. Is it possible to do it seamlessly? Including Synology Cloud backups not being interrupted etc? I know there’s a migration app on Synology with different options, but thought it would be good to get some advice etc.

I did see a thread from Dec 22, but just wanted to see if anything has changed since.

Thanks

If you’re DSM 7 → DSM 7 -OR- DSM 6 → DSM 6 , it’s trivial.

If you’re crossing DSM version boundaries, it’ll need to “upgrade / migrate” on the new DSM 7 machine.

There’s a How-To sequence in the Syno FAQ (look at the bottom of the FAQ ToCC)

It would be from DSM7 to DSM7.

Thanks for the info. Having trouble finding the part you’re referring to.

Here’s the whole process which is in the Syno FAQ (linked below)

On the FROM machine

  1. Stop PlexMediaServer
  2. Open FileStation
  3. Open PlexMediaServer shared folder
  4. Right-click AppData → Compress to AppData.zip
  5. (It will take time to finish)
  6. Now copy AppData.zip to the new machine’s PlexMediaServer folder.

On the new (TO) machine

  1. Stop PlexMediaServer
  2. Open FileStation
  3. Open PlexMediaServer shared folder
  4. Rename AppDataAppData.old
  5. Unzip the AppData.zip.
  6. You will see a new AppData created.
  7. After it’s done (again it will take time)
  8. You need to fix the underlying file ownership of the files in the PlexMediaServer shared folder. Here’s how to do it. (it makes the files you just moved to the machine match the PlexMediaServer user id on that machine.)
