Hi, I have an old SPARC based readynas server. I’m wanting to use Plex but I don’t want to buy a new NAS and I already have a raspberry pi.
So I was thinking I could install rasplex on the pi and then mount the NAS onto the pi and hey presto I have plex working on my NAS. (Well sort of it)
But before I try it can I just make sure that my logic is sound.
Thanks

Sounds like you should be looking at XBMC rather if you won't be running a Plex Server. XBMC is more suited for mounting network shares etc.
You cannot use RasPlex & PHT without a PMS Server anyways, so sharing a folder wont solve your issue :)
If you cannot have a server, then you need XBMC instead :)
Ah okay well thanks for the advice. I was hoping to go down the Plex route so that it would work with a chromecast. I’ve used xbmc in the past as a client but not as a server. I’ll look into it more.

If you want to use a pi as a plex server which is what it sounds like then I think you should re-consider. A plex server really needs to be multi-threaded with a good amount of grunt. The rasplex software is client software, not server so you need the server portion (plex media server) installed on a multi-core machine or even within the NAS itself (depending on resources available) in order for rasplex to be able to pull content.
In this scenario seeing as you mentioned chromecast the pi would be redundant as you would cast from a mobile device running the plex client such as a phone or tablet.
