Movie Titles Not Being Updated

When updating meta data some (but not all) videos are not having their titles updated correctly.

For example,

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

is listed by it's file name in my movies section: AUSTIN_POWERS_2

When I "anaylize" or "fix bad match" it correctly guesses the video, updates the other data like cast, writers, and poster art.  But I can't get it to fix titles.

Any Advise?

The name is not DLNA compliant in that form plus Plex won’t change any file names. (Obvious reasons)

That’s why you had to fix the bad matches.

If you want the file and directory names fixed/changed, I recommend a tool like filebot. It uses online databases for matching and then lets you construct a DLNA compliant name. It will rip through movies and tv series files like a knife through butter.

You will need to refresh your library after all renaming is done.

Sorry not the file name the file name is AUSTIN_POWERS_2.mp4 in this example. My problem is that the Movie in plex stays as AUSTIN_POWERS_2 and the title in plex is set to AUSTIN_POWERS_2. The Metadata says AUSTIN_POWERS_2 and it should say "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me". The rest of the metadata is updated, like writers, cast, description, and so on, but title is not updated.

To be clear I am in no way talking about file names being changed by plex, but about meta data in plex.

It's a naming issue, your files do not follow the plex guide

https://plexapp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200381023-Naming-Movie-files

Check the title tag in the mp4 file.  I bet it is AUSTIN_POWERS_2. To fix this disable the Local Media agent.

Not it at all. The file names are/were fine.

Check the title tag in the mp4 file.  I bet it is AUSTIN_POWERS_2. To fix this disable the Local Media agent.

This fixed it, you were right the "local media assets" took priority over grabbed meta data, and a tag in the file was set from when we ripped it from the DVD.

I haven’t had an issue at all for a couple years and this same thing just started on some of mine a couple weeks ago, been driving me nuts. So this also solved my issue by going into the Server settings, Agents, The Movie Database (which I use as default), and un-checking Local Media Assets. Finds and changes titles perfectly again. All my movies are named in the exact same format since day 1… Name.Year.Format.mkv which is the same since I first loaded plex. So I’m back working now w/ that small checkbox and titles are changing again.

I’ve also been experiencing this issue - interestingly, only with film series?!

E.g.

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace

I’ve tried removing / re adding the Star Wars films numerous times in an attempt to find a fix - but no luck
The file is given an incorrect title each time - even with Local media agent unchecked.

Here’s what happens step by step:

  1. Plex scans and finds the file correctly, and then starts searching for the meta info (as normal)
  2. Metadata is found, with poster, cover image, description, trailers & LucasFilm logo - but the title is still the original file name?!

This issue happens with the Star Wars & Mission Impossible series of films, so possibly something to do with that maybe?

I understand what hthighway was trying to say RE: the naming of files - but as the OP points out, if the rest of the Metadata is being pulled correctly, the problem cannot be with the original file name.

I turned off the Local Media Agent checkbox this evening, and although it doesn’t seem to have worked immediately, I will check later this week and update if the issue has resolved itself.

What is the file name you are using?

This has annoyed me for such a long time. Then I stumbled across this post, disable the Local Media Agent, Update my movies library, Grinned ear-to-ear.

Beautiful… you can also just adjust which gets priority following these directions…

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201035758-Set-the-Agent-Order

then right click on your movies folder…refresh…and all my titles look nice now  woot

I am having a similar issue with some TV show files. In this case Sealab 2021. The files all follow the Plex guideline of “Sealab 2021 SXXEYY” but only the first 10 episodes get tagged. I am having to manually type in the titles in Plex but then of course I’m not getting any of the episode description, air date, or other metadata.

I’m actually having problems with both movies and TV shows not showing the correct title. I followed the advice above and it fixed my problem with movies, but not TV shows. It does get metadata, and shows the correct synopsis, aired date, etc. It’s just the title that’s wrong. The funny thing is, the title it shows doesn’t exist anywhere in the file metadata. For example, I have an episode of South Park with the following metadata but it shows the title as “PSArips.com | South.Park.S03E01.Choir.Tour.720p.WEB-DL.2CH.x265.HEVC-PSA”

BTW @tonicboy, where do you get those metadata attributes?

Two suggestions:

  • Change your file path/names to be compliant with Plex’s guidelines. In this case, try:
/Plex/libraries/movies/Oldboy (2003)/Oldboy (2003).mp4

If you need to keep the rest of the info in the file name for some reason, enclose it in square brackets:

Oldboy (2003) [REMASTERED.KOREAN.1080p.BluRay.H264.AAC-VXT].mp4

This will cause the scanning agent to ignore it.

  • Configure the scanning agent your library uses such that Local Media Assets is not the first choice:

You may want to do this for both the Plex Movie and The Movie Database agents, just to be sure. After making these changes, force a manual scan of the library.

Finally, you may need to Plex Dance the item(s) just to be sure the changes are implemented.

Tried the second option (change agent priorities) but didn’t work.

The firt option (renaming) is the one I´m trying to avoid, it´s clear that something weird it´s happening on the plex side, it knows the movie, has all the available metadata, but still refuses to show the online DB title. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the original language of the movie not being english…

The plex dance… funny, probably I’ll try that as last resort.

Edit: nevermind, it works now! probably the library was still undergoing the “refresh”. So the agent config change worked! Thanks!

Also be advised: Renaming a file, once scanned, will not make it match again.

The file will need be “danced”

  1. Move out
  2. Scan Files
  3. Empty Trash
  4. Clean Bundles
  5. Rename as per specs
  6. Move back
  7. Scan if not automatically detected

No problem, glad it worked for you. Regarding names, even if it isn’t causing you problems now, it may in the future. At least for new files going forward it would probably be a good idea to adhere to the guidelines I linked to (and which @ChuckPa also linked). Also, if you need an easy way to rename a bunch of files, check out Filebot.

When I throw content at Plex I expect either:

  • Plex doesn´t know what the hell is that
  • Plex is able to match it with something

File names and folder structure should help Plex on the first scenario. But if a match is shown… there should be no issue at all.

Probably the “Local Media Assets” agent thinks that there’s something important on the file name, so it doesn’t want to drop it…

It’s all fine. Maybe not the most logical default configuration but fair enough.
